Hello,

I have just installed the hedman D port shorty headers onto my 88 camaro with 96 impala ss LT1 motor.

The way they sit, The driver side header points forward a bit as to be snaked around the front of the oil pan.

Is there any header extension pipe that Will make this easy?

I want dual exhaust if possible, but I do not think I will be able to have this bend custom made.

It seems my only choice is the (seemingly) restrictive Hedman Y pipe. which will turn my exhaust into a Single 2.5" This seems a bit choked for my lt1.

Is there a y pipe that will fit, that has a 3" or bigger outlet? I could deal with a big single pipe.

Does anyone know of any pipe from any other car or application that will work for me?

I am looking to go dual 2.5... or single 3-4"

thanks!

I have dual 3 "to 2.75" front pipes, snaked around the pan. It's tight but it fits. Dual 2.5s is easy.

Did you have those bent up custom or did you buy those pieces?
thanks

the LT1 pan is a bit bigger on the bottom sump...it sits a lot closer to the K member. This is the issue im having when snaking the exhaust tube over to the other side, going to hang down lower which is not what i wanted.

i have a similar setup as Twin turbo but my drivers side tube goes behind the oil pan under the converter. I dont have an LT1 motor tho, but its a deep sump oil pan. 3" pipes down stock location with custom fabbed turbo shorty manifolds/downpipes. A shorty header would be the same situation, just need to fab some pipes up and run down stock location

I'd take the headers and cut the flanges off....weld on a V-band flange and work with those. Lot better than the 3bolt header flanges...no leaks with vbands. Just how Twin Turbo has his setup.

or buy the headman and hack off the 2.5" merge and put in a 3" merge and run a 3" single with a good muffler.

I was thinking about doing the hedman hack to 3" single... should I put a 3" flex pipe in there somewhere?

No real need for a flex pipe. I have them on my turbo motor just so the downpipes dont put more stress on the turbo flange than necessary, when the engine flexs around under throttle.

Just make sure you get a good merge like the flowmaster Y pipe.

I fabbed the exhaust myself from weld els and straight sections, all stainless.

Re: How to do Dual Exhaust (or 3" y pipe) for Hedman shorties / lt1
hey.. I got the hedman y pipe on there now..

1. I have 2 50 foot rolls of header wrap.. should i wrap that y pipe.. especially where it goes by the oil pan? how far should I go?

The hedman y pipe goes down to single 2.5" .. I just bought flowmaster force II Full #" (not the one that slims down to 2.5)

2. is the short 2.5" single piece on the Y pipe going to cause a noticable choke if it goes right to 3" exhaust?

3. Can I reduce that by wrapping the y pipe and headers?

4.Is it worth it to buy more 1$ a foot rolls of wrap and do both headers, the y pipe, and some of the exhaust? / Does it quiet it down any?

5. Lastly, (flowmaster is in the mail) is there going to be room and approx how much between the y pipe and the flowmaster... and what can I put in there besides a cat or a piece of plain or bent pipe? (possibly a glasspack for a nicer sound?)

Thanks so much
