T56 in 91, full length headers clear?

Hello,

My friend and I are about to drop a 383 carbureted, Weiand street blower with the Quicktime Scattershield into his 91 Trans Am.

I have a few questions.

1. has anyone done this swap and used full length headers? if so, what brand and what is the price range.

2. anyone running true duals in one of these cars or is it simply not worth it?

3. anyone run exhaust under the car, but near the rockers with dumps before the rear wheels? if so any pics?

the motor is quite healthy, small blower, dart iron eagle 205 valve heads etc

Thanks in advance for your responses!

Tim

Just to add a little to robguitargod1's link.. Depending what transmission crossmember you use you may not be able to do what he did. The Spohn crossmember definitely won't work for that, I have one in my car and the transmission mount goes straight across the area you'd want to run your exhaust. I kept the spohn crossmember though because I wanted the crossmember mounted torque arm and went with shorty headers instead, for me it was the easiest way to keep some ground clearance. Hawks makes a crossmember to clear the exhaust, or you can make one yourself. Skulte used to make one but they're next to impossible to find anymore.

He's right, I'm using a hawks T56 crossmember. It's recessed for duals.

I just bought one of those for the simple reason I want to run LTs. I had a spohn before.

So you think the Hawk's is the way to go? I do know he was looking at both, we are more concerned about long tube header clearance, rather than the duals, the duals would be a project that would come later...so for now, would be nice to throw long tubes in, fab up a y pipe to a single 3 inch.

Does the Hawk's crossmember come with a mount, a way to mount the torque arm? also what does the Hawk's crossmember go for?

Re: T56 in 91, full length headers clear?

Anyone come up with a solution to use, make a torque arm mount with the Hawks? I have been out of third generation cars for a long time, my friend had one years ago and recently got this TA to do his swap in. Here is my 85. I went 12.50's with it on the motor, basic home built street motor.

I built it when I was 19, I am 37 now,,,,jeesh! I sold it when I was 25, then when I was 31, 32 bought it back from the person who literally drove it for 4 months then let it sit, at times in water a third of the way up the door, it was completely rotted but I got it home, get it running, stripped it and now put the motor in a 69 Corvette

Re: T56 in 91, full length headers clear?

If you are going to do that, don't even bother with the Hawks X-member. The reason to go with the Hawks X-member is to tuck the exhaust up tighter.

He just removed all of the extra clearance he got with it.

I had hooker super comps for a third gen with the spohn trans cross member I had a custom exhaust put it and it wasnt an issue at all everything cleared fine and sounded great

Re: T56 in 91, full length headers clear?

As long as you dont use a spohn crossmember you should be fine. Seems like every car on here that has spohn parts is lowered, and they use a spohn crossmember, and their exhaust is god awful because of it.

This is my setup, been copied by a few since I got mine. Dual 2.5's into a single 3.5 then over the axle:

Key is to get a notched crossmember. There's so much room around a T56 to do it so if you can fab up an exhaust I bet you can make a decent crossmember while you're at it instead of using that Spohn stuff.
