sorry if this is in the wrong section, but i just found out im moving out near philly (trevos) PA in about a month and so that probably means, goodbye longtubes and true duals with no cat i never expected to move so i didnt worry about smog equipment either..i have removed everything to clean up the engine bay. i dont know how indepth the visual inspections are there or if i can pass sniffer test with just a high flow cat (reverting back to the y pipe single in dual out set up) i am sorta hoping that i can maybe figure something somewhat affordable out. anyone have any 1st hand experience from that area on what im gonna deal with. i want to avoid using the orginal exh. manifolds and id like to hopefully get by with having my smog equipment look all there but not actually be functioning if possible. oh my car is carb too..rochester e4me thats been converted to non ccc. so i guess i would need for them to not notice that too haha, and possibly tune that a certain way to help pass sniffer. thanks for any help!

I don't think your car gets the "sniff test".as for the visual inspection you might want to try and make some friends in the auto repair industry.

yeah i found that site..did say only visual inspection and gas cap check. im gonna get rid of my longtubes and h pipe set up and get some smog legal headers and more typical set up with cat to start..i might get my tags good for 2 years here in ohio before i go so i wont need to ones for a few years.

 

PA is strict ,if i remember correctly they do a underhood visual check.which means that you must replace all you removed to "clean up " your engine bay.and they are not dummies either,they know whats supposed to be where.you have two choices ,forget PA tags,or get buisy complying with emissions laws.i might also point out its a felony to remove ANY emissions component on any car .

 

that is frowned upon ,if they catch you they will impound your car.they are not friendly like that.

 

pa emissions tests are performed by privately run businesses,not state run inspection centers.make friends in the industry,it's not that big of a deal.I've only needed a friend once since my car is driven less than 5000 miles annually.I wouldn't change anything,the state is not really that focused on the older cars(pre 1996) because they are generally driven less and become fewer each year

 

Is this your 84' and is your 84' a daily driver car?

If its not a daily driver you can register it as a "Classic" here and forget emissions legally, you will just have to pass yearly safety

Alternatively if you drive less then 5000 a year in that car it is emissions exempt, but I don't know if that also transfers over to the visual part of the inspection as well.

If you get to know people there are places that will run it through with no cats etc and just test the Kia or whatever else is in the shop and issue a sticker, but that is not really legit and there is always the likelihood of trouble if it gets found out.

You could also put an airpump back on, pull the belt once echeck is over and put it on for next year, get a legal set of headers, and a fake cat to look the part.

 

For the initial transfer to PA you'll need the full inspection with emissions.....after that, you'll be emissions exempt if you put fewer than 5,000 miles on per year. I removed my air system and only had to plug the holes in the headers to pass the visual component. Start making friends here now or throw someone a few xtra bucks to look the other way.

 

well, if i can do it honestly i will. So i should not get tags for 2 years here in ohio? i need to get tags anyway so would it be safer just to get one year or would they impound my vehicle anyway if they saw under the hood?

jb3829- so you passed the visual with no air system whatsoever? i take it you mean because you made friends with someone to pass you? since i know nobody i guess im a little concerned about finding someone..ill have a year or 2 i guess to figure it out.
Also you said emissions exempt..does that include visual inspect. or actual emissions testing (sniff test) because i already only have to do visual anyway..

a lot of the mechanics wouldn't even know what to look for because the enhanced emissions training course dosen't spend a lot of time on these older cars.as long as nothing is visibly bypassed you'd probably be OK.The undercover stateys used to come in with a golf tee in the vacuum hose to the EGR valve almost every time.if there is no vacuum line and no EGR valve, then nothing will look out of place.I'm not far from trevose

 

I think you could technically register it as a classic right off the hop, but You'd want to make some calls first.

But to transfer a out of state title to here does not require a inspection unless the car is Reconstructed.

reconstructed? ive done some body work and stuff but i dont think that would qualify as reconstructed...but alas if i get her runnin again i will "probably" drive it more than 5k a year. unless i make my wife take the bus.

 

i just called a shop that does emissions testing in bensalem, PA. they said that id have to do a visual inspect...which falls under "safety tests" and also a sniff test as well...the dmv website said i only had to do a visual..WTH? Do i just need to do a sniff test the 1st time? i guess ill be getting a legit cat now. hopefully i can pass with just a cat on the sniff test cause my smog equip will be set up but wont be working unless i buy another ccc carb.

 

Cars in PA over the age of 25 years old are emissions exempt. It would just be a visual check. No sniffer. Find a small private shop, Slip his a couple bucks and he'll probably sticker it.

 

well the only thing with that is i called the pa emissions whatever and also a shop in trevose and both said i need a sniff test and a visual..it might be only the one time since im moving from out of state idk. but i will probably drive it more than 5000 mi a year..it will be my daily driver, so that kinda leaves out registering as a classic.

 

Usually, You have to own a car in PA atleast one year before it could be exempt... I wasn't sure of that was applied to a car over 25 years though. I'll have to check my book.

 

ok. but it would still only be exempt if i registered it as a classic or antique right and keep it under 5k a year? it also says that if its registered as one of these your like only supposed to drive it like once a week technically (read that on the pa emissions website)..something like that anyway..im sure they wouldnt notice that and i could always mess with speedo, but seems like kind of a hassle when i could just put everything back in (which again will also be a hassle but hey)

classic still gets inspected for emissions for that year...my aunt owns a notary and i tried to find an easy way out too. easiest way....find one of those really rundown garages for an inspection....or dont screw around in public and you can get away with it...

 

you dont need a sniff test thats bull. thats someone milking money out of you. my first camaro a shop did that to me until i found out the true rules. antique u can only drive under a thousand miles a year and it has to have antique or collector car insurance, classic is 2500 miles a year and still requires a visual inspection. the under 5k rule only applies from the last date of previous pa state inspection. i got away with that twice cuz the car had a blown trans for two years and sat, then the motor popped after another inspection and it sat again lol.

 

oops i just realized people were still responding on this thread..my bad..unfortunately i am moving to trevose pa..which i believe is buck(s) county (not on that list of counties)..close to philly..they DO have sniff test there..i mean i called the PA emissions whatever and also a couple shops. and actually a sniff test is less of a concern than a visual..having no smog equipment (although im buying a new cat in the next few days)

No. I'm saying in these Pennsylvania counties, there is no emissions test required (no visual, no nothing, just annual safety). You just have to be a resident of one of those counties. PA has most of the emissions tests concentrated in the more populated areas.
