exhaust system help
exhaust system help
I have a 1987 camaro iroc z-28. Im not decided on how I want to run the exhaust. I know I want true duals whether it would be 2.5 inch pipe or 3 inch pipe. My question is: could anybody help me out with pictures or tell me how to run the exhaust pipe for good ground clearance? And I would like to see pictures on how it is done to either run side pipes or straight out the back. Whichever you guys think would be best. Thank you.

Re: exhaust system help
would you be looking at short tube or long tube headers? you should be good with ground clearance either way you go though. ive seen alot of third gens (mine not included) with headers straight to the back and they have no problems with clearance and didnt have to make any mods to the body itself to fit the pipes. you should be good though

Re: exhaust system help
I'd start by checking your State , because technically true duals are illegal (Federal violation) in all 50 states, just that some states choose to ignore it during Inspections.
Then be aware that there is no real benefit to duals over singles. Plenty of stock route singles (just bigger pipe) have produced well over 500/600 hp on their single pipe system like with the Mufflex 4" single exhaust. So unless your building a real monster of an engine, all your doing is adding weight which in effect, results in a slower car because of the extra weight it is carrying.

ok were can i find this mufflex pipe? Also if I would go single pipe what muffler can I use? I want something loud and less restrictive because this will be a street and strip car. If it helps at all the motor i have in the car is a 383 stroker.

Re: exhaust system help
i was bound determined to do dual exhaust much like yourself, i opted to go with a single 3.5 all the way back,

this is my thread, i say how to im laying it out. i am also using hedman long tubes, but i cant finish the rest until i have the engine in. it will have more ground clearance doing it this way. btw i did buy both tailpipes and had to cut them both, due to ordering the wrong muffler design( it was 28 inches long and barely fit) hope this helps. should have the motor in and exhaust finished shortly. good luck
edit... also if you go this route plan on 1 additional 90 degree 3.5 bend

Re: exhaust system help
well if you stay with a single exhaust, youll obviously need a y pipe, most people usually go with flowmaster or magnaflow mufflers. but ive heard alot of cars with hooker aerochamber exhaust systems that sound real good. i agree with blackenedbird too about the mufflex and he has a good point about the weight
Re: exhaust system help
Does any body make a good muffler that fits into the stock location. I know flowmaster makes one but i know what that sounded like and i didnt like it. Im just looking for a loud soundin muffler with less restrictions so i can be legal to run in my class at the dragstrip and still be able to drive it home. I would really like it to exit in front of the rear tires if possible. If anybody has done this what mufflers did you use and how much ground clearance did you have? I wanna run either 2.5 inch pipe or 3, 3.5 inch pipe. Any help would be apreciated.

i think the magnaflow mufflers sound the best IMO but if you want loud get something like an outlaw muffler. they are like 60 bucks and are basically a straight through swirl design. but you want something that will keep the law off your back and if you go with a single system you can buy a nicer muffler as you only have to buy one.
if you are afraid of losing performance why not get cutouts? put them in the y pipe? and how much hp are you planning on making that justifies the duals? my motor build is around 375 hp area and a single will be plenty for mine.
and make sure you get mandrel bent pipe and dont have an exhaust shop bend it. a crush bent pipe loses around 50% of flow increasing backpressure and hurting performance.
just some things to think about. good luck with whatever you decide
Re: exhaust system help
if you think single would be fine what size pipe do you recomend? im making between 450- 500 horsepower out of my 383. and also whatever size pipe you would recomend do you know where i could get a y pipe of the same size or would you recomend a size bigger. or better yet could you or anybody else help me figure out how to build a y pipe? would you recomend an x pipe after the y pipe or not. one last question does anybody beside flowmaster make a good loud muffler for these cars that bolts in the back and exits the same as the stock muffler?

hooker makes a muffler called an aerochamber that bolts in place, magnaflow makes one, and thrush makes another.
you will be fine with exactly how im doing mine. i made mine so it would allow further upgrades to breathe. im doing 2.5 MANDREL bent tubing into a y pipe collector. now when they join you will want them to be next to the driveshaft to keep your ground clearance with such a big pipe. a single 3.5 the rest of the way back will do it, or if you plan on doing a lot more with the car you can do 4 inch.
but heres a list of the individual bends I used as a reference...
(4)2.5- 45 degree
(1)y pipe collector 2.5 to 3
(1) reducer 3 to 3.5(welded right to the y pipe to make it 3.5)
(2) 3.5- 45 degree bends
(2) 3.5 - 90 degree bends
(1) 4 foot piece of 2.5
(1) 4 foot piece of 3.5
i already had the hedman header xtensions and they are a must to get past the trans pan.

Re: exhaust system help
i agree with sleeper, if your looking for a good sound and still nice torque and power, you can go with cutouts and get that pure v8 sound with headers to a single exhaust. thats what i have going on mine right now and it sounds awesome. i hav a qtp electric cutout before my cat and it gives off some nice torque ad it sounds awesome. i agree with sleeper and would consider that too
