Can I do it in 8 hours? Header install.

I've got a all stock L98 camaro that I want to completely delete the Air system and add shorty headers to. The thing is I take a mechanics class on wednesdays and thursdays and thats when I'd like to do it. Between the 2 days I've got 8 hours. Is that plenty of time to do it with a lift and helpers? Also I tried getting the air tubes out of the manifolds today. It just doesn't seem like its going to happen. Anybody got any tricks to getting them and the actual manifold bolts out? A broken bolt will definately set me back some time. Thanks

Time to install will vary depending on what you have...a rust free low mile car will be easier to work on.

Installing shorty headers is not a huge job, but you need to make sure you have everything to connect them to the catback exhaust. Many times the Y-pipe doesn't fit correctly, depending on the brand, and adaptors may be needed to mate them properly.

Removing the smog pump is straight forward: remove the pulley, remove 2 bolts holding it in, reroute the belt (if serpentine) using the method outlined in this forum.

I'd say give it a shot.

Mating the exhaust back to the catback won't be a big deal. I'm not going to try to hook it up while I'm there I'm just going to bolt the Y up and drive it to a exhaust shop and have them do it. The main thing is just getting the headers bolted to the engine. I worked on it yesterday. I've got the Y pipe unbolted from the manifolds, manifolds unbolted from the engine, smog pump is gone and everything that goes with it. I'm having trouble getting the dipstick and pass manifold out it hits on the heater box and the manifold hits on the dipstick. I'm going to take out the passenger side engine mount bolt and see if I can rock it up enough to get it out. I also went ahead and unbolted the steering shaft for more clearance. I couldn't get it out by the brake lines so its just laying there.

Once you unbolt the dipstick from the mount tab on the manifold it is just "pressed" into the block (more like pushed). You can pull the dip stick out rather easily as long as you pull it out of the block straight. You may need to be under the car to see the angle the dipstick is entering the block.

Welp we got it back together. I drove it home and it ran like crap. I didn't gun it or anything open headers but I'm beginning to think I crossed a plug wire. I'm going to let the exhaust shop weld up the 02 bung but would not having the 02 sensor cause it to run awful and not have any power. It didn't even have enough power to shift at low rpm. It wouldn't change gears until a little over 2k. At least I know the check engine light works now lol.

Probably went into limp home mode. Get the wires figured out. Get the o2 bung in it and get the exhaust bolted up and I guarantee you it will run better than before.

are these long tube headers. If so you need to install a heated oxygen sensor. don't have the bung filled.

Nope they're shortys. Another thing, the 4th bolt back rubs the header tube and could barely be tightened let alone put the dipstick bracket behind it. I tried bending the bracket and cutting the outer edge of the bolt hole off but it still wouldn't work. Would tack welding the dipstick bracket to the header flange work?
