Hooker cat-back system for 92 RS
Hooker cat-back system for 92 RS
Hi,
I just picked up a 92 RS as a father/son project with my 17 year old son. I am interested in putting a hooker cat-back system on it because the old exhaust is falling off and the car sounds a lot like a farm truck. Anyway, Summit lists two Hooker cat-back systems available. I am trying to figure out which one of these would be the proper one and I am not real sure what the difference is between the two systems. The car has a 305 TBI if that makes a difference.
Here are the two systems:

Any suggestions or real world experience?
Thanks for the help

It says either of those will work, but I remember my Intermediate pipe being 2.5 inches, not 3. Anyway installing these are anoing. you either have to take the rear end apart or put it on a lift to feed the intermediate pipe through the rear dif. I personally cut the pipe about 8" out from where it started getting twisty and the fed the shortend pipe through easy peasy. Then I got a coupling, 2 more muffler clamps, and some tape to stop any leaks, and now it's almost as sturdy as it would be un-cut.
Personally I wouldn't spend that much dough on a system for a stock 89 RS. I have a Dynomax Super Turbo sysytem on mine that costs 199.99 and has free shipping if you go to streetsideauto.com. It sound pretty good, but It's a little quiet for my taste. The car needs a better cat, y-pipe, and some headers. Plus the engine is REALLY mild so there's not a whole lot of sound to hear anyhow. Good luck.

The car is for my 17 year old son. I am fine on low power right now. He just wants it to sound good. Once he gets used to driving it for a while, it will get either a 350 or a 383 swap.
A 383 with some AFR heads and a decent hydraulic roller cam would make a nice dependable, powerful combo.

The only difference is the I pipe. 16823 is 3 inch all the way and the 16820 has a flange for the stock 2.25 inch cat which can just as easily be cutoff but the other one is cheaper so depending on what you need. I just replaced my cat with a pipe and I also got the hooker shorties with a 3inch y pipe so it all goes nicely

Exhaust came in today. With any luck I will get it put on this weekend. I ran Aerochambers on a big block chevelle and they sounded awesome at WOT but pretty mellow at idle. Will be interesting to see how the little 305 sounds when it is done.

Installation went well. We left the old cat on for now. It seems fine.
Shortly after smog pump which had been rattling completely locked up and the belt was still spinning and burning rubber. The pulley was not turning at all. We pulled the smog pump and put a longer belt on it and it is fine now. The car is pretty quiet now which is want my son wanted. It does have a decent tone and just a bit of rumble to it.
