How do I get my exhaust to do the "Pirate Laugh" when I let off? Need help lol
I want to run an exhaust on the camaro and I've heard a lot of cars like the 6-0 GTO's or Ls1 F-Bod's give off a raspy like a fast pirate laugh kind of mmmmMMMMMM blop blop blop blop mmmmmMMMM rack rack rack noise I really don't know how to describe it. But I want my Z to sound like that when I let off or change gears its like the most maniacle evil sounding exhaust sound I've ever heard and I'd love it on my car lmao. Problem is I have no clue what causes it. My friends GTO does it with a spintech muffler but didn't do it with his old flow master setup. So I'm wondering if it's the exhaust itself or is it the size of the engine that makes it happen. Can anyone chime in to help me out. I have an L69 car with hooker headers and y-pipe. I'm going to try to find a vid of the exhaust sound I'm looking for if no one knows what I'm talking about.

Ok the sound this Datsun makes at exactly 2:11 that's what I'm going for when I let off.

You wont' get that noise, not without a LS series engine. The firing order is different between the two and its just not worth the money to change the firing order for a traditional SBC.

I'd much rather have this noise.

This may get close to your desired engine noise with a traditional SBC firing order. Its an LT1, but any SBC with similar flowing heads and cam will make the same noise.
Its a Its a Lloyd Elliot stage 2 ported LT1 head, and a LE2 cam which is I think is about 226/232 duration on a 110* LSA. He doesn't list the cam. It doesn't quite have the same Chop I've heard from that cam on other LT1s, so it may be the smaller emissions legal 224/228 cam.
That is very close to what my GTA should sound like when I finally get around to having my shortblock built so I can drop the heads/cam I've spend $$$$ on having done.
So basically, you need compression, overlap, and a fairly unrestricted exhaust to get that noise.

Pour on a bunch of fuel in overrun, and there will be enough making it through to burn off in the exhaust with a little less spark advance. Really it's just a kinda cool sounding "flaw" in the tune. It can be tuned out, but usually you don't spend money on the dyno just to dial in the way it runs when you close the throttle lol.

Heres the right link for everyone just incase, cause i noticed the other link was a little weird on my computer.
Exhaust sound at exactly 2:11 that Mr.Crabs laughing sound.
I'm not going for the cam sound or the choppy idle if that's what you guys are trying to explain, its just the little raspy after effect... Ive even seen my stock exhaust do it sometimes when i shift, its very rare but it does it. I just saw that my boys practically stock Ls2 GTO does it ALL THE TIME gunned or even super slow driving miss daisy like leaving a stop sign and shifting into 2nd at like 1500 rpm. I figured it was just an exhaust thing thats why i was just hopeing someone would be like "Oh yea i have an LM2 and it does it all the time". So i can have an idea for when i do my exhaust.
I might end up just buying a Loudmouth cause I do Love that sound but all i drive is highway so i know its gonna Kill me.

Full exhaust headers back, high flow/ no cats. A very Free flowing exhaust will get you that crackle many times.
Could be a few other things such as a lean mixture upon sudden deceleration causing detonation. Which is not a very good thing.
None the less the more free flowing your exhaust the more garge you will get out of it on decel. Remember its also much more noticeable from outside the car, you will never hear it just like that from inside.

Re: How do I get my exhaust to do the "Pirate Laugh" when I let off? Need help lol
Dunno why it did it, but I had an otherwise stock 350tbi K3500 (horribly underwhelming), that I put a 3" single cat on and built a 3" cat back around a 50series flowmaster, it cackled pretty much everytime the throttle closed rapidly from more than 1/4, and got me yelled at a few times due to a long downgrade in a residential area I regularly traveled in the wee hours of the morning.
I second overfueling and shorter less restrictive pipes too. My current pickup's exhaust is half the factory length with a 40 series and its got a rowdy cackle til it goes into closed loop.
I love the sound, but I don't know a sure fire way to make it short of what's already been mentioned, mainly cam and compression if you want it to build power and not just dump gas out the pipe

Ok so I finally did the exhaust to get the sound I wanted... Cut the factory muffler out of place and ran a y-pipe from the I pipe and ran the stock tips to their factory location. Love the sound, I thought it was gonna sound too loud with my headers but it sounds good cruising. When I get on it, it's hella loud, I love it so far.

But honestly for street driving you should run a muffler, you can have it sound good, and be quiet too when you aren't beating it.

It's exactly what I wanted, I drive a camaro not a Kia optima. It's supposed to sound aggressive.

If you think a tractor sounds aggressive by all means. Mean while I'll smoke you in my G6 that's so quiet it can't even be heard over the sound of the tires as it runs a 14 second pass at L98 trap speeds.

Re: How do I get my exhaust to do the "Pirate Laugh" when I let off? Need help lol
Easy fellas, to each his own. I do agree, open exhaust will never sound as good as a properly constructed pipe with the right muffler for cruising, though they do sound great at high RPM. OP, the answer may be cutouts or race bullets, but I don't have any right to talk since I'm too cheap to replace the muffler and after-cat exhaust routing on my Toyota... though I do believe that we should do everything we can to help the thirdgen's image.
Also, for the record, my Trans Am's exhaust does crackle a bit with the factory exhaust from heads to cat, an SLP LM2 bullet and an el grande cheapo crap cat back a local exhaust shop I won't be returning to put together. It generally does it if I leave it in 1st and get up around 2-3k, let off quickly and slowly decelerate.

Anyway my car does it a little just because I have a 3.5 inch exhaust with a splitflow muffler (which is a glorified glasspack).

My cam is too small and my exhaust too long to get it really raelly raunchy, but it definitely does it on decel.
Ive been wanting to change it for an aerochamber for a while now, Just way too loud.

Loud is embarassing in a street car, period. Kind of like having a hole cut out in your hood for a tall air filter.

Example:
My car at the strip, Cut-out open:
My car at the strip: cut-out closed, Headers, !cat, SLP 2otL:
Inside the car with the cut-out open is atrocious. You cannot talk to ANYONE. The floorboards vibrate...etc. This would be minimized if I ran it all the way out the back instead of dumping under the pass seat. But to everyone else it would be loud and annoying when doing NOTHING.
But, on the highway with the car in 6th gear and the cut-out closed? Engine barely makes any nice whatsoever. There's a little more noise in the back seat, but otherwise nothing to note. There will be even LESS noise as I install sound deadening material in the back, and install new under-hood insulation.
I want my car to only be loud WHEN I want it loud. When I'm just cruising I don't want people to here me coming over ambient traffic noise. A good muffled exhaust does that.
The new engine will be 11:1 compression, so that is a slightly tall order, but hopefully the 2otL can make it happen. If not I'll be switching to a different muffler. Compression makes more noise.

My car did it with a GM 847 cam on a 383 LT4 hooker headers y pipe all 3 inch and magnaflow muffler and I would actually get pops of fire after a full throttle pull in third then let off and gear down
IT can be done without a LS but it cost me alot with my setup (and no it was a result not a goal)

Trust me guys, the car sounds fine I've had over 15 f-body's that I've put from flow masters to SLP to borla. I know what sounds RIGHT and wrong on an F-Body. With the headers and my piping is 3 inch mandrel bent all the way to the rear and factory tips so it stays hidden. Everywhere I've taken people give me compliments on it. It sounds fine cruising and when I get on it it's loud af and sounds crisp. No rattle can honda noises none of that it sounds good ill post a sound clip as soon as I get a chance.

Also, it doesn't drone, or make weird vibrations. The second I put it into 5th it shuts up completely even in the highway with my 3.73's at 70 it's barely noticeable I have full conversations all the time when my co workers and I go out for lunch or when I'm out with a girl it's fine... I wouldn't have left it on this long if it was bad. I had the money to do the full exhaust I just kept hearing them on third gens and was bored I wanted it to sound different. No my car doesn't sound like a tractor nor will a slow *** pontiac g6 beat me.
