To X-Pipe Or not to X-pipe

I am planning on redoing the duels on my car this winter and am unsure if I want to add an X-Pipe or not. I know it is going to take some work, but I am also planning on fabiing a new trans cross member so I can tuck the pipe up into the tunnel a bit better, and also move the torque arm out of the way.
The big question is it worth it or not, I know it helps with scavaging and all, but how much differance an I going to see from true duels with no cross over.

Re: To X-Pipe Or not to X-pipe

I am no expert and I am in the same phase of building my new exhaust. I plan on using an X-pipe and running into two 3"x3' mufflers. I have heard it is very good to use the X-pipe.

Re: To X-Pipe Or not to X-pipe

There seems to be some misconceptions about H pipe vs Xpipe vs straight pipes......
straight pipes old school technology it has no balancing for exhaust flow..

H pipe was designed by for to compensate for crappy exhaust, which helped balance the exhaust flow.Lightly changes the sound in the process.

X pipe was designed to help scavenge exhaust flow essencially making a the exhaust pull exhaust from one side to the other causing a balancing affect. this will change the sound of the exhaust note and from what i have seen makes the exhaust note a little more crisp, removes a lot of the droaning sound along with increasing the TQ just a bit.

Re: To X-Pipe Or not to X-pipe

i had an X pipe on the 71 Nova i used to have.. the engine was a 355 with vortec heads, GMPP HOT cam with matching 1.6 roller rocker arms, and an Edelbrock performer vortec intake with quadrajet intake. that was backed by a T10 4 speed manual with 3.70 gears. the exhaust was Hedman headers with a Flowmaster kit after that had a crossflow muffler behind the rear axle... it sounded good with the H pipe that Flowmaster put in their system for the first 2 years i had that car together, but it totally changed the attitude of the car when i swapped in a Hedman X pipe kit.. it was more mellow at idle and quieter at part throttle cruise with no drone at all at highway speeds.. but the real fun came when i wanted to play- the X pipe made the car just absolutely mean sounding above about 3500rpm and the noise it made at 7200 rpm under power could only be described as bone chilling.. not only that, but throttle response and torque was better off idle and i gained a couple of miles per gallon.. in other words, it was better in every way with the X pipe than it was the H pipe.

+1 for the X pipe. 100% worth it.

Thanks That is the kind of info I am looking for, my stroker sounds pretty mean as it is, I have hooker comp headers true duels, and a set of flow pro twister mufflers, with the exhaust exiting out the back. Here is a Sound bit, was smoking a bit as I had just rebuilt the carb and it wasnt set up yet.

Re: To X-Pipe Or not to X-pipe

my headers run into a single inlet, dual outlet flowmaster. Would this act as a x pipe?

no. you have a single exhaust with dual tailpipes.
