Header collector gaskets?

I have a 1987 IROC Z 305 TPI with Edelbrock shorty headers. I did not install these headers; I am the 3rd owner of the vehicle and the original owner was the one who modded this car...

My question is...

I had a bad exhuast leak and it turns out it's where the header collector flange meets the exhuast pipe. What gasket do I need? The guy at the exhuast shop said he doesn't have the part and my gut feeling is the collectors are 2.5 inch. Did Edelbrock make any other size collectors on their headers for a 305 TPI?

I went out and bought a Percy's 2.5 inch performance collector gasket set made of dead soft aluminum and the guy said it's the wrong part. Is there a universal gasket I can go out and purchase today that will most likely fit my collectors?

I'm not sure why you were told that it was the wrong part..Dead soft aluminum is what you want to use and yes they should be 2.5" collectors.

Yea I am not sure either. It was confusing looking online because Edelbrock doesn't even make headers anymore. But you can still find them through Summit with what they have left. And the only ones they'll sell me based on my specs are the ones with 2.5" collectors.

Guy at the shop said he found the right part and that it's done. I am going to ask him what he used. Better not have been some cheap ****. At the same time, I am going to overhaul my car in the next year and put new headers and exhaust set up... so as long as it holds up until then I'll be happy. Thanks for the response.

Re: Header collector gaskets?

Just make sure you get the gaskets with the same bolt pattern. I don't know what edelbrock uses but some out there are 2-bolt and some are 3-bolt, so just make sure you get the right bolt pattern and the right size and you're ready to rock.

THere is no bolt pattern, these are donut gaskets. They slip in between the collector and ypipes

Oh, sorry. My bad. I haven't ever had to deal with those before I guess.

Re: Header collector gaskets?

Edelbrock headers suck IMO had some not much gain rusted through quick and split. Get the Hedman under chasis headers, cheap and they flow. They are holding up fine in my car.

Re: Header collector gaskets?

Yup, he showed me the old part. It was a donut gasket. And from what I've read on here, most people dislike Edelbrock headers. Maybe that's why they discontinued making them? Go on Edelbrock's website, you can't even find headers on there, only through 3rd party distributors like Summit.... These headers and exhuast system are from the original owner. When I have the time and money next Spring I am going to re-do the whole system, especially now that I don't have to do emissions testing.

So it's fixed but now I have other problems lol...
