Dumping my flowmaster, suggestions on a single 3 inch muffler (IE Quiet)

OK guys, no haters here, and I do respect the flowmaster crowd.. but, the story is I have a 3 inch cat back flowmaster american thunder system on my 84 Trans AM, (Edelbrock TES headers and 3 inch collector of course

I put the new 383 in last fall, and, well..... Its too damn loud... A good sign I got the motor right, but The GF wont ride with me, and the cops pop their heads up when Im 15 blocks away.

So the muffler is a 3 inch in, and I was looking for the factory dual outlet, but I cant find anything good online. Ive been hearing good things about walker or dynomax quiet flow stuff, but nothing with a 3 inch in dual 2.5 out.

Does anyone have any experience with current model options that flow well, but turn the volume down from flowmaster, I dont want to buy a whole other system, just the muffler and tips..

Any thoughts appreciated.. performance wont take a back seat, but It doesnt need to be this loud hahaha...

look at hooker aerochamber. keeps it tame at idle and cruise and wakes up when you wood the pedal.

also, how stuck on a dual outlet muffler are you? i'll be going to a single this winter when redo my exhaust...my tailpipes are tucked, so it won't change visually.

I guess I'm not stuck on it really, more interested in hiding things anyway to keep under the radar from the increasing MTO inspections up here.. They regularly blitz for visually modified cars, so I need to look and sound stock and carry a big stick gives them less "reasonable grounds" to open my hood if there is nothing visual for them to go on hahaha! Does that open things up quite a bit if I'm not stuck on dual outlet? I figured size was the biggest factor, but I might be wrong..

that opens up a lot of doors running a single 3" or single 3.5". your choice of mufflers is endless. you could go with the dynomax ultra flow round case, hooker aerochamber, etc, etc. running a single 3" in and a dual outlet doesn't gain you anything, and you'll probably see better scavenging from a single pipe.

basically any good brand like the above that you put in place of your flowmaster will flow better and net you some more ponies.

the first muffler i ever put on my car was a flowmaster 80 series. it was fun in high school and sounded great, but when i learned how poorly they flow, and realized i could get rid of some of the drone, i looked elsewhere.

I didn't mind the Dynomax Super turbo muffler when I had that on my last car, I'm concerned that it might not have enought flow on the exhaust side, they rate them at 700CFM, but hey maybe that is big enough, air in=air out, but I thought the exhaust gasses expanded, so I don't really know what a good ballpark for a mild 383 exhaust flow should be.. Any ideas, there or are they all good?

i would look at the ultra flo if you're worried about holding it back....2000cfm. i really don't think you will run into a problem with a well constructed muffler. get on youtube, find one you like the sound of, then check it out on the company's website.

Any thoughts on my CAT for flow? I hear they quiet the sound a bit, I know this one was empty years ago when I bought the system, but I'm no adverse to putting on a new one for volume considerations if it doesn't hurt flow.. Maybe the empty cat chamber hurts flow more than anything, with all that volume banging around the air causing turbulence... Just a thought..

A Dynomax Ultra Flow muffler is one of the highest flowing mufflers you can buy, and it's surprisingly quiet. I replaced a 3" Spintech with it, and it is far quieter. It's so quiet that I was actually disappointed at first until I got used to it. The noise level is even more surprising considering I can stick my arm right through the muffler.

The Hooker max flow is also VERY mild at idle and EXTREMELY loud when you "drop the hammer"......
There s a good example on youtube of the jeckel & hyde nature............its on a GTO...........almost silent as he pulls off the he hits it and HOLY F**K it starts talkin.........
