Long Tube Install Question

Soon I am going to install a set of long tubes on my 305 berlinetta from 84. I am looking at Hedman Hedders 68460s. On summit racing, they say they are designed to fit the car as stock. Does this mean I wont need a ministarer or anything like that. I know I will need 90 degree plug wires. Im planning on getting header bolts, and a drill and tap kit incase a bolt breaks. Anything else I should know?

Re: Long Tube Install Question

its been my understanding that in order to fit any long tube headers, you need a little "mechanical persuasion" with a hammer in some spots.

Even with the tight fit you didn't need to change any parts? Which way did you put the headers in, top or bottom?

Re: Long Tube Install Question

I have hedmann longtube headers on my 350 and it is pretty tight but no persuasion was needed with the hammer. I do have a mini-starter though, but never tried to fit a regular one.

*EDIT* and my headers were put in when we dropped the motor in, meaning that we tied them up to the sides and dropped the motor in to bolt them up.

So I will most likely need a mini starter then?

Re: Long Tube Install Question

I would guess so, yes. But I can't say definitively.

Re: Long Tube Install Question

Mine is just whatever Autozone handed over the counter, of course my car only gets driven once a week when it's not winter so idk. But it's been on there for....6-7 years now and is still turning like a new one.

Re: Long Tube Install Question

high torque mini starters are the way to go anyway when you put headers in. i have a new starter in with my shorty headers and after driving around for as little as 10 minutes, it will act like a heatsink and bind up refusing to start. i have to drive around with a 1 liter bottle of water, if it seizes up, i have to put a hole in the top of the bottle and hose down the starter. before spending $250 on a new starter though, i'm gonna try the starter cover, which looks like a tin foil bag that goes over it.

Re: Long Tube Install Question

This is what I bought for my long tube headers(Ed quay 1 7/8)
http://www.summitracing.com/dom/part...9540/overview/

Although when I had my hedman shorties I used a summit mini starter.
But the above starter was smaller and lighter and had way more adjustability
