Quality of Hedman Hedders?

I'm looking to buy headers for my camaro for my new motor. Has anybody ran Hedmans #68470 headers? I'm sort of on a budget, otherwise I would buy a nice set of hookers. Any other suggestions for a budget header? By the way, I need the y pipe too.

Re: Quality of Hedman Hedders?

I don't have those, but I do run hedman longtubes on my 350. Hedman makes really good stuff, mine are pushing 7-8 years and the only difference between now and when they were new is that they are no longer totally black (as clearly the heat burned off the paint that came on them, but that will happen with any header).

Re: Quality of Hedman Hedders?

I had Hedman headers and when I got the y-pipe, it hit the frame rails and the crossmember. The headers were fine, but when i bolted on the y-pipe, as i tightened it, it would spread the headers out toward the frame. I contacted Hedman tech support and they were awful. They told me to email pics and a description, so I did. The only reply I ever got was "were you the one I talked to on the phone?" They never replied back after that. I returned it, bit the bullet and bought Hooker. I still have the Hedman headers if you want them, maybe the y-pipe you get will be better. PM me if you're interested.

Re: Quality of Hedman Hedders?

I bought a set of Headman long tubes for my truck, Had to dremel four holes to get them aligned then grind three tube welds to get my small headed header bolts down flush on the flange. After do'n all this I craw up under to install my pipes and the left collector was faced downward, The right was faced upward and towards the drive shaft.

As drdave88 did, I ripped them back off but couldn't return for all the grinding..... Trashed them and bought Hookers.....

Re: Quality of Hedman Hedders?

my only experience w/Hedman were long tubes on sbc 350 1970 Monte Carlo, had lots of issues w/leaks due to thin flanges, the hookers on my current 3rd gen have been the best headers so far

I plan on going with shorties. Maybe those would fit better.

Will they be easier to install if I have the motor out?

Re: Quality of Hedman Hedders?

Most of us are going to tell you to do it the right way and be done with it, but most of the time as humans we cant except some one else's words we have to experience it ourselves. In David Hume's words "Impression's over Idea's" We have an impression of crappy headers but can only tell you soo much about it for you to have an idea. Once you actually have the impression of sh1tty headers you will know what we mean. Its like the saying " the only way to teach a child not to put there hand on the stove, is let them put there hand on the stove" They learn pretty quick once they actually have the impression of the heat. You can only have such a great idea of what burning heat would feel like.

Re: Quality of Hedman Hedders?

From what I read I guess ya'll must have just bought cheap headers from hedman, honestly. Because my set were comparable in price to a set of hooker headers and they've been great.

And yes, if the motor is out you will have an easier time.

Well the hooker 2055's are on top of my list.. It's just they're $500. You gotta realize I'm younger. Money doesn't come too easy.

Oh yeah i know exactly what you mean man. When i first got my f-body 5 years ago i was 17 senior in high school with a part time job. I had very little room to buy any type of parts so they were always cheaper items. The headers that are still on my car are the Jeg's Mids headers found here http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS-Performan...rentProductId=

I believe after seeing other pictures of the flowtechs they are knock offs of them. To be honest the Jeg's headers werent bad just smaller at 1-1/2 Primaries. Be warned though they are NOT CA Legal, and i didnt know this back then LOL. Now i bought Hookers 2055 for smog legalness and also that damn Y-pipe. Its nice

That's funny... I'm only 17 too! But I haven't really heard any that good about the flow techs.. I always thought headman would be a step up from them.

Re: Quality of Hedman Hedders?

Hedman headers were installed in my 82 Trans Am in the late 1980's. They have never been pulled, have had their share of pot hole hits, but yet thy are still in great shape.

I do need to replace the gaskets, but I truly dread pulling those bolts out. I still remember cursing them 25+ years ago when I installed them.

I'd buy Hedman headers again.

Re: Quality of Hedman Hedders?

Theyre good enough. For the money they're fantastic.

The long tubes require minor modifications for fit, for the money it's not a big deal though.

I've had the 68460s on my car for 6 or so years now.

Re: Quality of Hedman Hedders?

Do you have to worry about emissions? If not you can get Hooker 2460s and Dougs y-pipe (D901) for $50 more than Hedman headers and y-pipe. Well worth it. If you do, then see if you can find someone selling some 2055s on the classifieds, theyre fairly easy to find on there, that may even get you below the Hedman cost. Trust what we are saying, don't get Hedmans, you will have issues.

Re: Quality of Hedman Hedders?

The only good shorties out there are the Hooker 2055's. For long tubes the hedmans are fine.

I think people have bizarre expectations about header fitment. They're probably never going to fit perfect. You will usually have to do some finagling to get some headers in the car and make it work.

I would also avoid the 2460 Hedmans and get the other shorties that have the included y-pipe. But the Hooker shorties are going to be a lot better. More expensive, though.

I've had Hedmans on all my old toys, Mustang, all 3 Chevelles, Trans Am and now my 84 camaro and have never had a problem with them.
