I'm looking for a little advise if anyone has done something similar to my project. I have a 88 Iroc convertible, T56 and I drive this car everywhere I can especially long trips. I've accumulated some components to keep everything under the hood appearing to be period correct performance parts. So, a found a Super Ram intake and got a good deal on some E-210 cylinder heads. Now, the catcher? Dart SHP block machined to a 427.
How big of header primary tube should I be looking for? I would like to keep full exhaust out the back. I'm guessing I'll be heading to an exhaust shop for some custom work but if I can avoid that and have a quality product. Thanks
It all depends what way you want to go. Are you willing to sacrifice some HP for reduced noise on trips? How about sacrifice some HP for ground clearance?
If it was me and I drove the car a lot I would get some 1 3/4 primary shorties from dynodon and then run a 3-4" single system with a resonator to a decent muffler of your choice. Based on you HP / noise needs and wants.\
That's what I'd do as well; yerbasic high-quality ceramic-coated stainless headers, specific to this chassis, and a good quality 3" or larger cat and cat-back. Since this doesn't seem to be a max-effort racing situation or the like, most other options will require some form of sacrifices that are likely to be unacceptable in the application at hand... noise, fumes, weight, ground clearance, maintenance intensity, what have you. Sometimes it's best to just go with what works and not outsmart yourself too much.
Yes, this is definitely not a max power high rpm build. I appreciate the help, I just hate buying something before checking options and opinions that other people have. So, I'm looking for 1 3/4 primary short tube headers most likely.

Then add the cat of your choice. If you not doing a cat add a resonator. Then buy any catback. Personally if you are driving a lot run far away from flowmaster.
I went with a set of Dougs long tube headers; 1 3/4" primaries, 3" collectors, into 2.5" dual exhaust, with SLP Loudmouth II mufflers, dumping in front of the rear axle. It sounds great and isn't too loud inside the car. Mine is a street rod build, that's getting a 383 crate engine next year or I'd of stuck with the stock exhaust set up. My car is an automatic, so I didn't have to work around the clutch slave; that may be the rough part of you are looking at true duals with long tubes.
Where I live only has one muffler shop and the old guy that runs it shied away from doing the exhaust for me, even with me installing the headers. Because of this I decided to order the entire exhaust system and install it here at my shop and then drive the car to the nearest performance speed shop (50 miles) and have them fine tune the system for the best clearance. I have an appointment with them next week, but the car is derivable as is and doesn't drag, although I'd not want to have to do any speed bumps at the moment.
