How To Make A Third Gen Sound Louder And Better

I have a 1991 RS with the stock tbi 305 and it has a flow master single in, dual out. I want the car to sound the same but be louder. I was wondering what way I could get the same sound only louder. Would gutting the cats do anything? Any suggestions?

Get rid of the cat if you don't have smog inspection and it will be louder, headers seem to make one sound better also. Definitely going with a 3in exhaust made mine much louder.

Save your money, invest in a better drivetrain. No use having a loud 16 second car.

Why attract the attention of the police if you can't outrun a shopping cart.

hmmm, my 305 TPI from 1990 is plenty loud. Plenty fast too. Bob lets run'em!

Not sure what the cam setup is on yours vs mine, that could come into play. You would probably get some more noise just by putting on the "correct" replacement muffler.

Re: How To Make A Third Gen Sound Louder And Better

I'll be honest, my GTA is too loud for the street. I love the tone, and how aggressive it sounds. But most times the high compression, big cam, and full, unrestricted exhaust just make it a pain to deal with because I'm wary of getting pulled over for a noise ticket.

Its not too horrible below 2500rpm, but nearing 3000 it starts to come on cam, and by 3500 its transformed itself into a brutal scream that has no business on the street. Video's are in the sig link.

While I love the tone of the exhaust, I am thinking about adding in a resonator in the I-pipe to take more noise out of the car and quiet it down without restricting flow much.

I think mine is the perfect dB AND tone level. If your a gear head like me! If I was to pull up into a crowd of 4 door sedan Mercedes owners at a fancy restaurant, they might think its just wrong

ha ha! Its quite possible someone has since replaced your muffler. The one under the gas tank, with something that is quieting it down. Investigate that and see if that is the situation. You'll find lots of muffler recommendations around here.
