engine vin code S
engine vin code S
I was looking for a new replacement Y pipe for my 305 crossfire injection 83z, but all I can find is a replacement for H code engines. I looked in my factory service manual and all they show for v-8 exhaust is the H code configuation. What's the difference? I was trying to avoid the expense of headers and a complete system, but it seems I may be forced into it. I even called the local dealer for the replacement and they couldn't help me either.
vin code S
I used the vin decoder on this site and got these results:

In 1982 and 1983 the vin code S was used for the 305 dual fuel injected "Crossfire" engines. Later on during the 3rd gen run, the vin code S was used for 6 cyl engines. What I have been told is the exhaust manifold for the Crossfire is the same as the 305 non-H.O. (I forget the vin code - H?).
My personal opininon - get aftermarket. The factory "Y" pipe is shaped like a "T" with a 90 degree pipe entry...

My last post wasn't quite correct...
In 1982 the V-8 Crossfire engine was vin code "7" while in 1983 it was "S". In 1986, 87, 88 the "S" code was used for the V-6, and in 1989 the ''7" was used for the V-6. Somebody at GM must'a been bored... ;-)
