Closest I can get to open headers

Closest I can get to open headers
I have a 1986 iroc and the stock exhaust is pretty much on its last legs. I'd like to rip it out and put on some long tube headers with the smallest amount of exhaust piping possible. So any ideas on how i can route some kinda super simple side exit exhaust? I'm really tempted to run a bent pipe just to direct the exhaust from under the car.

I wouldn't sacrifice safety for the ability to make a racket.... Especially if you spend time in the car. Unless this is a purpose built race car, stick with a shorty, the benefits of a long tube don't show up until you've spent thousands on other parts of your motor and chassis. If noise is what yer after, put a good exhaust system on it with a couple zoomies for the times you wanna impress the ladies..... or girls... or yerself

Chances are if you're running a stock exhaust, then you're running an essentially stock engine. If this is the case, then the stock exhaust manifolds will suffice and won't hold you back whatsoever in terms of backpressure. Cut the converter from the y-pipe orifice, run a 2 1/2" exhaust tube (or 3" if you prefer) from the y-pipe outlet the length of the passenger side door (with the occasional bracket to hold it up), then dump the exhaust before the rear tire the way the Saleen Mustangs did with the right sized tip, or even dual chrome tipped, whatever you'd like. No need for dual exhaust, as one side will work in your case. You can also utilize a muffler a tad bigger than the exhaust tube to reduce the sound. Can be done for peanuts, and actually look pretty good.

i've heard that true long tubes don't fit very well on these cars. You might want to look into mid tubes instead. there might be a set of longtubes that fit perfectly though. just do your research.

Be careful what you do, what you think you have is not necessarily what other people see...
