Hooker 16767 Y pipe is NOT 3” Anywhere

Kinda disappointed, just was fooling around with car parts and happened to measure my new hooker y pipe. In NO place is it 3” it’s 2.5 all around. The hooker website literally says inlet 3” outlet 2.5”. What the heck!!! The actual flange makes it about 3” on the inlet but the actual hole is only 2.5”!??! it just doesn’t make sense why they’d flow 3” 2460 headers into a 2.5” y pipe and waste that half inch. And the reason I bought the hooker was because I thought it was 3”. Could’ve saved 100$ and got the Doug’s ones (they say 2.5 inlet, 2.5 outlet. Can anyone explain this I’m not super happy

Can you post a link to the web listing that states the Y-pipe is 3” in diameter? I just checked the listing for that part on Holley’s website and it describes it as being 2.5” O.D.

It's pretty well known that Y pipe transitions to 2.5" at the Y outlet. That's why there threads about cutting it at the Y and welding in 3" pipe. The Doug's isn't any different, it's an interchangeable copy of the Hooker Y. You'd still have to cut/weld it.

Part of the problem is the stock exhaust is about 3" into the single cat on "HO" cars, and the exhaust from the cat back is 2.75" that then necks down to 2.5" when it enters the muffler. What you end up with is people talking about their 3" exhaust that have never measured anything, or paid attention to how the stock setup changes size, etc. I.e. there's a lot of confusion out there.

Either cut it off and have someone weld 3" pipe onto it, or send it back and fab the entire Y-pipe from scratch. Next time read the descriptions more carefully so you know what you're buying..

i measure a few spots though, there is nowhere where it’s 3” so how could I cut it? Or you mean keep the “arms” of the Y as 2.5 and join them as 3”

it says inlet diameter 3” I thought that meant the “arms” of the y would be 3” maybe just a misunderstanding on my part

Just so you are aware, that is a reseller’s website description, of which Holley/Hooker has no involvement in creating or controlling.

oh gotcha, my bad then. Sorry if I came across wrong. For my build I’m sure 2.5 will work fine. 3” headers to 2.5 and then to the stock catback for now. Then eventually I’ll upgrade to a better catback and maybe have a 3” welded into the hooker. Other engine mods are a bigger cam (torque cam) and a different air cleaner. I also have been completely refreshing the heads, new exhaust valves, valve seals, new guides, reground intake valves w backcut for more flow, reground seats and new springs.

I'm glad you posted about your concerns as it gave me an opportunity to check the product listing on the Holley website and make sure the information was at least correct there. Good luck to you on your project.

Thinking they meant 3" inlets from the header collectors.

Used to be the Y was two curved pipes welded to a 3rd pipe. Cutting the third off and replacing with 3" was possible. But looking last night, some of the photos show a stamped Y piece that might make that impractical.

Hooker would be a lot further ahead if they changed it to Y into a 3" pipe, since that's pretty much the defacto standard for thirdgen stock style exhausts for over 20 years.
