Hi All:

Looking to Replace my Aging Exhaust System on my 1985 Trans Am. My TA no longer needs NJ Inspection, I am told that the CAT is no longer needed, so looking for a Performance Oriented System with a nice rumble. I went to my Local Exhaust shop in Northern New Jersey, that I have used in the past, only to be turned away, they no longer do them. Prevous Exhaust shops I used are also gone !!

There are alot of Exhaust Systems made for the 3rd Gen, I was recomended to a few, Magnaflow, Waldron Exhaust and GMMG Exhaust Systems. I am looking to keep the TA with a Stock Appearance, I do not want Chrome or Polished Tips showing in the back.

Any Exhaust System recommendations ? If any one knows a Good Custom Exhaust Shop in New Jersey that is recommended, that would be awesome

Thanks

I bought GMMG for mine. LOVE IT. Just don't pay the extra for the tips if you don't want them. But they do look good. LOL.

If you want the stock exhaust tip looks maybe look into Dynomax. Most of the companies have tips straight out the back. You could have an exhaust shop rig up stock tip outlet on any system, but why would you want to spend more money after on a system you just bought?

Re: Exhaust Systems 3rd Gen Trans Am
I'm on my second Dynomax Ultra Turbo system and when it's done for I'll use the same system again. Nice deep rumble, fit perfect, aluminized construction, somewhat affordable. There are two sizes for these and they are for a cat back system. I'd leave the cat. converter on yours if it's still working ok, no real performance difference and save some aggravation in fitment of the new pipes.

I fully agree on the cat, if it is ok just leave it, no gain other than noise, which isn't a bad thing LOL. But with all the BS coming from governments and the green myth they are pushing, there will be a crackdown across the board on this kind of stuff, it will cross all lines. I don't agree with it, but I know it will happen. I had no cat for years, just got tired of hearing a few friends got pulled over and fined for their systems, I figured I'dd avoid the headaches and threw it on. Now up here we will be having mandatory inspections happening in our future, cats are going to part of that. They really want gas vehicles off the road.

I run a 4th gen 3in FlowMaster system with hooker headers + no cat. Sounds great, stockish engine.

IMHO they are the BEST sounding exhaust for thirdgens.

I still KICK myself for allowing the stock tailpipes to be thrown out along with the rotted out factory muffler. I would have loved to keep them as a pattern to have some stainless duplicates made in a larger size. I'll have to resort to working from pictures when the time comes.

If you are building your system from various parts the Walker or Dynomax Super Turbo tailpipes are pretty close to stock in appearance. Tuck up nice, aluminized, last about forever. Don't have a better pic handy:

Depends what you want. Flowmaster is generally the worst sounding with the most resonance. Magnaflow, hooker and borla are popular

I'm going to assume you have a stock TBI/TPI motor?

Lots of guys here are running true duals on the 305, and the 350 motors these cars came with.. Truth be told,, they're probably losing 1-5hp with that much flow.

I suggest going to a shop and having them fabricate the standard exhaust system the car came with but with 3 inch piping.

Try Spintech 6000 or the 9000 series. I have yet to meet someone who doesn't absolutely love their mufflers. There are youtube vids all over the place on the 9000 series muffler. The 6000 is quieter 9000 is crazy loud

Re: Exhaust Systems 3rd Gen Trans Am
For stock appearance, I just got a couple of 30-degree, 2-1/2-inch stainless and angle cut them. This is a Magnaflow muffler to which I added some small resonators. Swapped the Magnaflow since to a Dynomax Ultraflow. Makes noise when you get into it but no drone on the highway.

I like my stock '84 H.O. exhaust system, but you can't just buy one of those new...

Re: Exhaust Systems 3rd Gen Trans Am
4” mufflex. Fit better than my summit 3” system and will support anything you put in front of it. I’m not a fan of lowering the PHB so most of the dual 3” kits won’t work for me. I run the hawks sinister 4” which is a muffler less mufflex and put my own vibrant Street SS muffler in place. My 700hp turbo 5.3 is pretty quiet through this exhaust.
