Best Exhaust Setup for Shorty Headers?

Can anyone recommend a good exhaust setup to run with shorty headers? I’ve got an 87 Trans Am with SBC, T56, and Spohn crossmember. I bought a y-pipe with my headers a long time ago. I had my brother install the y-pipe bc he’s a high school auto shop teacher and has a lift. I love my brother but, sometimes I really wonder about him bc he told me the y-pipe wouldn’t fit around the oil pan so he had to flatten the part that goes behind the pan to get it to fit. I was at work at the time and he didn’t bother to ask if he should do it. I’ve been running like that ever since. I would like to fix this issue. Thanks.

I have the OE Y pipe with pipe in place of CC. If you aren't worried about ground clearance you can go with duals. If you want some clearance follow the OE layout. Maybe use larger pipe. Paying someone to do it will not be cheap. Pics would help to see how much flattening of the pipe has been done.

Re: Best Exhaust Setup for Shorty Headers?

I’ll have to see if I can get some pics at some point. I also have straight pipe in place of CC. I guess my real question is what options other than the stock Y-pipe will work well under the car? Are there other options from the shorty headers other than the Y-pipe, since it didn’t quite fit with my oil pan? I have a Moroso deep oil pan and for some reason this caused an issue with the y-pipe not fitting between the pan and the crossmember.

I'm sure it did. Probably your only option is custom made. Go to an exhaust shop and have it made to fit. Depending on how much the pipe is flattened you might want to leave things alone. Pics please.
