I'm looking to see what some others here have done to route exhaust WITHOUT going over the axle. Not looking for side pipes but something different beyond a simple dump before the axle. I remember someone or a couple people here did a nascar "boom-tube" style side exit years back but looking to see what other creative methods you all have come up with.
I'm not opposed to cutting things out of the way to make this work, i just need to consider a muffler in the system as this is a street car.
The players cars from the race series had those side exhausts you mentioned. I knew a couple guys that had cars from the series after. Fixed back up for road duty (althought they were fairly road worthy while racing) and still had the exhausts. Side exit in front of the back tire. Sounded good, actually not too loud and did look good on the cars.

I saved this photo from a post on this forum. Supposed to be a Players system.
So I’ve always wondered why no one ever tried cutting out the floor boards where the rear seat cushions go, in my youth I had a few Gbody cars and the mufflers hang right up in that area, thirdgens rear seat floor hang much lower while makes it not ideal since the mufflers would hang to low losing a lot of ground clearance. Anyways I’ve always wanted to try that and also for cars going over the axle cutting out the truck well to tuck a muffler up high.

ATM this is what im doing for the muffler, I've been toying with the idea of routing the exhaust out the side rocker before the tire
Custom suspension stuffs are in the way, could I make it all fit, maybe, but it would be super tight and not worth the aggravation IMO.
Is your plan to make custom mufflers? Also is this the same red ta that you did the minitub years back? And when you say custom suspension stuff do you still have a torque arm? Sorry lots of questions but I’m just trying to picture it.

No customer muffler, just maybe routing.
The parts in the way are a crossmember for a new version of my Mumford link, the 3pc sway bar and link arms. It makes things a bit crowded back there and fitting a 3.5” or 4” pipe over the axle with all that just doesn’t make sense.
No torque arm, went with a 3link. Free’s up the tunnel but exhaust is still on the passenger side

3 link? Adjustable like a Ron Sutton setup?, now your just teasing me with curiosity.

Mumford vs watts? Was a watts link not an option?
Everything is adjustable, everywhere.
I made a mumford link years ago as an experiment on my old 92 and just kept refining it. A watts is a little easier but the mumford offers better ground clearance and adjustability.
Spintech and a few others make mufflers that have the inlet and outlet on the same side of the muffler (some corvettes also) so you can do something like mount them where the rear seat wells are (get them out of the way if you want something big and "quiet"), and then run a bend out of the front and exiting right in front of the wheel. If this thing will be on the street I believe that in NJ you have the same requirement as in MD which is that the exit needs to be behind the door opening (I think 5", which means that it literally has to be at the front edge of the wheel opening), or you will get pulled over here if a cop notices.
Man I really wished I was paying attention in TGO class years ago, I remember your post on the yellow bird doing the Mumford and I also remember Deans post on his design but for some reason in my mind it was basically like a reverse watts and to me I was like they are already available from a few vendors for thirdgens so why bother fabricating one, anyways so glad this post made me research it, I had no idea you could get the roll center so low.
I could, but no. At this point im probably just going to dump it right before the axle. I really want to do a side exit through the rocker but it doesn't get me behind the door enough.
Anything dumped under car sucks for interior noise and resonance in my opinion.
I agree completely, that's why I'm here looking for other ideas.
I do have significant insulation under the carpet and the car was pretty quiet and comfortable Inside previously all things considered.
I can direct the turndown to the side, but then I'm pushing the exhaust through my wheel. Probably not a huge deal honestly aside from possibly causing damage to the wheels finish.
Options seem pretty straightforward, to me;
*under the rear and out the back -leaving clearance for rebound travel...OR,
*out the sides in front of the rear wheel. I don't think I'd be aiming exhaust at/through the rear wheel.
I don't consider dumps to be a legitimate solution for a street car: 1. it's too loud. 2. It's likely to introduce CO into the cabin, 3. b/c of #2, it's illegal in most states (needs to protrude beyond the body by at least 1").
I made my own side pipe exhaust on the Kart project and it has worked well, sounds awesome and doesn't bottom out. Different platform, but similar constraints.
