so I put a 4in mufflx on my car forever ago with the single in single out spin tech. back in the day i didn't care how loud it was. all these years later getting it running, it's ridiculous haha.
beside replacing the system with something else, or hacking in a 3in muffler.(what I'm leaning towards) anyone know of a decent flowing 4in offset to 4in offset muffler I might put in to be able to hear myself think?
it's a small cam 406 with a super ram and shorty dyno Don headers. so not high rpm and honestly it's never going to see a dyno for hp numbers, so quiet over a few extra hp flow is how I'd lean.
You may want to look into a muffler with a helmholtz resonator built in. These are becoming more popular and the OEM's have been using this design feature for years. Another option is a muffler that has a switched bypass so you can be loud when you want and quieter when you don't.
I thought I read somewhere that the helmholtz resonator was just to kill drone at a certain frequency, usually highway?
I'd love a valved muffler. I have the nnp valves on my c6 and think every car should have them. but there's only one 4in I can find. the Varex and it's a center in center our with a big actuator sticking out of the top. I'm not sure it would fit even with hacking up the exhaust pipes as there's not muchr room back there. I also can't really find any info on it. from looking it seems to be just a stright thru pipe. with an internal valve. not much muffling besides just closing off the exhaust and spiking back pressure. the oem style valved mufflers are real mufflers with just a internal bypass valve.
I'd be all in if I knew it would fit and sound good. but 500 for a muffler and I'm not sure that even included the controller is kinda harsh.
Building a 4" system for my 93, trying to chase the elusive 500rwhp NA with a stroker LT1, this point it would have been easier to get put a 10 bolt, aluminum drive shaft and a set of 16x8s and get it but oh well. Any case, talking to a few folks, apparently the 4th gen Borla have a neck down over the axle to 2.75", Borla open vs closed on my car was over a 20rwhp difference. Noise was a concern, I opted for a stainless bros muffler (same people as Ticon), so we'll see. From wat I understand length and shape, I went with a oval 19" muffler. One thing, I was told was that an option is to have it neck down to 3" or ever 3.5" and run that size muffler. Have a cut out prior to that, if needed for the track.
These days? I'd look at OEM take-off mufflers. Most provide extreme sound reduction while keeping hp loss very, very low. Not sure where you'd find 4" in/out...diesel truck perhaps? But the flow capacity for the noise reduction you get w/modern OEM mufflers is pretty incredible.
I had brought an iroc with an lsx 454 to mufflex and told them I wanted it quiet. They installed both a spintech and a magnaflow right after it before it dumped at the back bumper.

very true. I have thought of a diesel truck 4in but they are very long and I only have 19in to play with.

they installed 2 on it at the same time?
do you know where? cause there's very little space. I have the spin tech on it now and you can't hardly talk to a passenger inside.
Idk what the spintech alone would of sounded like alone with the LS. I would assume deafening. This was done back in 2017. 2 years later I had gotten the same setup with the spintech alone installed on a 383 and standing behind the car was crazy loud. This dual muffler setup honestly sounded slightly above stock to me.
I wonder if you could plumb two C6/7 muff's under the rear bumper? In the location where the oval SS muff is in the pic above...
I just happen to have a set of the base nnp c6, the zo6 nnp and the 8-4-1 valved muffler. I don't really see how any would work in the cross flow muffler place. maybe hanging off the back. buy the are very large.
I said eh and ordered a 4in valved varex xforce. I gotta do some mods to make it fit since it's center in out instead of offset. but hoping it's worth it

They wouldn't . They'd have to go in the locations just inside the rear bumper, like where the muffs are located on a C4 'Vette. IDK if they'd it there, either. They are big.
I run a 20" case Dynomax Ultraflow (17233) in a single 3" I/O configuration on my LS swapped car, it dynos 425hp at the wheels, so figure north of 500 at the crank.
Has enough sound to hear it inside when you want to, no drone at cruise.
You'd probably have to modify your tailpipe to make it work.
