Exhaust Cut-outs..

Guys-

I've been hearing a few things about "exhaust cut-outs", and how they produce more HP and louder exhaust sound....

What exactly are they?

Are they a "do it yourself" mod, or do you purchase them?

How exactly are they done?

Are they illegal? Will I still pass smog with them?

Any negative points about em? (I know they take a little torque away)

Thanks

I forget which, I think you lose HP and gain torque or is it the other way around? It's just a piece of pipe with a flange or cap that you can take off to have open headers. It'll definately be louder, but illegal for street use if uncapped. There are electric version, cable operated and the kind you have to get under the car. The last one seems to be the best even though not the most convenient.

I happen to have it on my 90 l98...very very loud..and very nice sounding..especially wit the slp headers. IF your in north county you could come chek it out.

I put the Mac Race Pipe on my car. Then I went to the local parts place and purchased some emmisions tubing. It kinda looks and feels like a hose. Just get about 2 or 3 inches and slide it over the emissions tube next to the cat.

I got the cutout and electronic flange fro $150 from empire motor sports. The electronic flange was a f***ing joke didnt last me a week.

Anyways I would have put it on myself, but i didnt have access to a welder. I went a few places; midas, monro, chevy dealer and none of them would have wanted to have anything to do with them. They told me to get lost. I found a local shop to put it on, he never saw one before and I was there to help him put it on.

I think those other places where trying to tell me they were illegal If you have it capped tightly with a gasket, I dont see how you could get into any troubble with the law or inspection.

I have mine behind the cat near the diff in the back. If a cop ever did stop me im sure that noise pollution would be the least of my toubbles...

check out my page on the cutout

heres a pic of the cutout with the flange on

Thanks for the responses everyone

CustomX- Do you pass CA smog? If so, do you just plug it before going to get inspected?

traxxxton- That pic really helped me alot, cuz I know some people say to install the cut-out before the cat, while others say after... and I don't want to do this, and screw it up...

So you added the cut-out after the cat, but before the muffler, right?

Where did you get your cut-out and how much did you pay? I heard Summit sells them...

Am I lookin' for a certain size?

Do they come with a plug? Or do you need to fashion your own?

Thanks again

Ok im posting a pic of just the cutout - this is all you'll need to buy. I bought my setup for about $150 from empire motorsports but that was with the electronic flange which was a rip off.

You'll just want to get the cutout just as in the picture below. I think you can get them from summit or jegs for about $30. This cutout is a flowtech.

As for size, you'll need to get the same size as your pipe (duh)

You can put it before the cat or after your choice. Basically before the cat for strip-only use and after the cat for strip/street use. What I mean by that is are you planning on driving it around on the street with it open or not? If no then before the cat if you have room. If you want to drive around town with it open, then go after the cat near the back. This is because its much louder, actully too loud to drive on the street when its before the cat. Where I have it, its loud, but if I watch myself, I wont be bothered with cops.

Theres a plate and gasket that came with it. My gasket is 3" and can be bought at any pep boys, they might even have the plate too.

I just got my car inspected last month, they didnt say anything. Why would they say anything? Its capped tightly with a gasket, and no exhaust is leaking out.
