Need instructions on how to put on a cat back
This weekend i'm going to buy a dyno-max cat back and replace the muffler with a Flowmaster 80 series muffler. i need to know how to put it on, if it is hard, how long will it take, and how you think it will sound. Any feed back will be very helpful.
Thanks,
Dustin

Why are you spending the money for a Dynomax cat-back, then spending the money on a Flowmaster muffler?
Why don't you just buy the Flowmaster kit?
And installation is as easy as rip off the old, put on the new. No real tricks involved. The Dynomax kit comes with all the needed hangers welded on to fit in the factory locations.
And don't waste your money on a Flowmaster. The Dynomax muffler flows fine, and sounds better IMO. It' got a nice deep rumble.

I was in the same boat as you are in about 2 weeks ago or so... i had just got the dynomax cat back 3"... well after about 3 hours of taking the old off... we thought we could do it in the garage with a bunch of floor jacks. well to get the old off we just took the grinder and cut it in about 10 pieces. that wasnt so bad. but plan on breaking the bolts on the cat converter (if they are stilll the factory). then if you have a 3" pipe it isnt going to bolt right up and fit right on the stock cat. the stock cat is 2 1/4" in and out. we couldnt even get the pipe over the rear axle. we had the car jacked up high enough on all 4's we were sittin indian style. so unless you can weld and have a hydrolic lift i dont think your going to get it done. believe me 4 of us couldn think on how to get that pipe over the axle. so i had to take it to the exhuast shop, they wouldnt bolt it up to the orig cat. with a 3" flange slipping over the 2 1/4" cat they said since it isnt a 'snug' fit its going to sound like the worst exhaust leak you could ever imagine. they had to weld a little adapter (from scratch) to the dynomax pipe... it cost me 65 bucks for them to do that. i hooked the muff and tail pipes up my self took at 5 mins.... good luck if your doing it at home!

My 2 cents: Soak the bolts attaching the old system to the converter with WD-40, or something similar, a couple of days before you begin. Just hacksaw the rest of the old system to get it out. ( Have a couple of new blades handy.) Pre - assemble the new system on the floor to make sure everything fits together right. Once it's on the car, make certain none of the joints have slipped apart before you start tightening any clamps. I had to have part of mine welded because I ended up with too short of an overlap in one section and the clamp wouldn't hold it together.

P.S. Mine is a Flowmaster. Pipe over the axle was multi-piece and went right in. Bolted up to 3" cat without an adapter. From reading the post before mine it sounds like I got off easy!

mine was easy, edelbrock makes a flanged intermediate pipe to fit my stock cat (when I had one), it also had a two piece intermediate pipe. I've done it twice, (I took it all off when I replaced my cat), first one took about 3 hours (taking old off and putting new on) second took about a hour (just putting it on)
yeah i guess all the other cat backs are simple. the exhaust shop had to take the real sway bar off while on the jack. the guy said "how do these companys sell these things saying you can do it at home?" haha yeah i had to agree with him on that one. it is just about impossible to do the dynomax at home.

I put my Dynomax kit on in my garage on floor jacks.
I did have to take off the panhard bar, but other than that, it was a breeze.
Maybe it's because I only have a 2 1/2" I-pipe? Now that I think about it, the 3" would be a major PITA!!!
One thing you have to think about to is that there's no law saying you can't cut the I-pipe and weld it back together with a coupling. Or even clamp it until you can get it welded. My friends and I had thought about doing that, but by the time we thought of it, it was 11pm and I had to be to work at 5am the next day.

yeah i think we could have done it if i had the 2 1/2" the only thing in the way was the hanger on the intermediate pipe. another 1" or so and we would of had it. but for us it was near midnight and we all had to be at School in the morning! plus we had about 30 mins clean up and shower.... but 65 bucks and a week or so later i got it all on there!
if you disconnect the panhard bar it is possible, if you don't the car has to be extremely high off the ground. i only have the 2.5 in. cat-back which is going to be hacked off this week for and edelbrock.
thanks you guys. all of that info helped me out a lot. I guess i will have to take it to a muffler shop here soon to get it on there. from what you guys are saying it is near imposible to to it on your self so i won't screw with it. i'm dissapointed because i like to do every thing my self but its cool. thanks agin for the posts...
