Stock muffler is shot, need sugestions

I have a fairly large hole in my stock muffler. I have a 88 Formula tpi305 lb9. I was thinking of just replacing the muffler and getting some tips. My questions are: Which mufler should I get? Flowmaster 80? Could I expect any gain in power? For the tips, I like the long ones, like 22" or something. What would be a fair price for a shop to do this?

Hey, i personally would go with the Flowmaster. Mine tends to really **** off my neighbors because its kinda loud but it does help performance also. Not that pissing off neighbors is a bad thing, lol. I got my muffler installed with all brackets and chrome tips for 200 even. Im not sure thats a typical price though but it didn't seem too bad.

Hooker Aero-Chamber. Why not get a complete cat-back though.

I am very new to performance exhaust. Everybody talks about cat-backs, but truthfully I do not even know what they are. Could you fill me in?

If you were to just change the muffler I'd go with a flow, but for catback I'd go hooker.

What are the differences between Hooker and Flowmaster? Which has better flow, sound, pricetag? Do they both install with no mods?

A cat-back replaces the pipe from the catatlytic converter back with a 3" pipe.
I read before the Hooker outflows the flowmaster, but I forget the post, but there are like 2 that are above the Hooker.
Sound will be your preference, I like the Hooker better, I can send you my sound clip thru email or AIM screen name is buffshields350
The Hooker you can get the cheap one like I did for $200 and have it welded on. These are the tips that come with it.
Also if you want you can check out my video clip in my sign, but it's not the best for sound.

I don't know it was probably made by some dude in his garage. You better return it and get a Flowmaster.

Wow, that dude made a better sounding and flowing exhaust than Flowmaster, maybe he should start selling more.

I can go on forever, keep em coming.

And your point is, I guess I'm missing your point sorry. They also make exhaust so they're not a header company but an exhaust company.

Mufflers are Flowmasters business and pretty much made performance exhast what it is now. Maybe theres a reason the Aerochamber is cheap.

I'm not as much of an expert as either of those two....however I have an 80 series muffler on my 84 Z and it sounds killer!

In fact an owner of a 67 Camaro ran out of the store to ask me what exhaust I had.

I've not tried the hooker, but I am pretty happy with what I bought.

The muffler I replaced was a Midas muffler installed with clamps...so I just bought new clamps, ripped the old one out and threw the Flowmaster up there. I bought turns from Pepboys and will have some tips as soon as I get off my butt!

Total cost well under $120.00! Time to install, 30 minutes including pulling the tool box out and putting it away!

Well.... That's some good entertainment there guys.... :sillylol:

And from the clips I have heard, the Hooker does sound pretty good. But I am and always will be a Flowmaster guy. So are most of my friends. I hear them on all types of cars and they always make the car sound really damn mean... I understand and know exactly what people are talking about when they complain about the tinny sound and the droning. But that tinny sound is what makes it sound so mean.... And I just don't see the droning as coming any where near close enough to offset the awesome sound. Yes, I have taken my car on longish trips on the highway and heard it drone. No, it didn't bother me at all. And as for flowing more or less than other types of mufflers, I doubt the validity of these comparisons if the tests are not done independantly. Plus the difference is really nothing to get excited about and won't make much of a difference on most people's cars if there actually is a slight difference.

Well that is my $.02.... and there are a couple of sound clips of my Flowmaster setup floating around here if you want to hear it... just do a search. I recommend Flowmaster (surpise surprise, huh guys! )

I agree, I've heard Flowmasters on different cars and they vary very much depending what you put them on and how. Some sound OK, and some are just amazing and have a sound unlike any other like it really means business.

I'd have to agree, I had a flow on my car before the Hooker, the previous owner installed it so I'm not sure which kind, and a friend had one on his '89 IROC, his sounded so much better.

I did a search and saw some of your past arguments. What about interior resonance? I want to be able to hold a conversation while driving, this is my daily driver. Right now I have a silver dollar sized hole in my muffler and it is getting loud. For comparisons sake, how good and/or loud would these mufflers sound compared to stock with a hole in it.

Acording to Summit's web page Hooker Areochamber is cheaper than Flowmaster 80 Series. I don't see this as a bad thing.

Please send me any soundclips for comparisons.

I have the sound clip for interior resonance at home on my computer, I can get it to you later, at 60 it's real quiet. I'd say below 2500rpms it's sort of quiet.

Inside of my car with the windows DOWN, it's not that loud...unless I get on it. Windows up going down the freeway at 80 I hardly hear it.

The time when it is the loudest inside is going down hill in gear.

And yet no matter what condition when I romp on it, it roars!

I have Flowmaster and it sounds great because I have a decent motor. I've heard Hooker and it also sounds great. I think it's up to personal preference. However, I'm sold on the MAC cat back. It's only 2.5in but it sounds killer on my friends stock GTA. Plus, I helped him put it on and it has an awesome bolt together fitting system. No slip fit here. Not to mention, the 3.5in tips are the best looking out there. I don't really like Hookers tips allthough the exhaust does sound damn good.
