Confused about the legality of headers

I was recently looking for Headers and I see that the slp and edelbrock are 50 state legal however i see some which are not. I was looking on year one and saw flowtechs that were legal in 49 states (all except california). What are the differences between say slp vs. flowtech vs. hooker??? What do the headers have or lack that puts them in these classes? I live near Philadelphia, Pa and am looking for a decent set that would be legal. If someone could telll me some headers that would be legal for me. i would appreciate it.

To be legal in CA, it has to be certified to be emissions friendly. The process isn't cheap which is why CA has the fewest car goodies.

I believe when they say 50 state legal, it also refers to whether they have the A.I.R hookup.

Mark how do you like your headers that was the ones i was leaning toward. I know slp's are better but they are a little to much$$$ for me. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am definetly going to get whatever i use coated and i want to try to keep the cost under $500 with coating included. Right now i can get the edelbrock for $440 with coating.

Well, I haven't used any other kind of headers, but I wish I would have got them coated, they seem to be fine for my set up.

The Hooker 2055's have a metal tag welded onto the #1 primary with the CARB exemption number. Therefore, 50 states legal.

Save yourself the headache and go directly to the source of the inspection. Those guys will be able to tell you the "truth" about a visual inspection, emission inspection, noise limits, etc. They are usually car guys too and will most likely want to help you. Also, try several different places then take it back to them to have it inspected. Good Luck!!

no. They can have A.I.R. and still not be 50 state legal. If they don't have a California Air Research Board (C.A.R.B.) Exectutive Order (E.O.) number, they are not California legal. That E.O. number is not cheap to get. The part must pass emissions testing to show that it has no negative effects on stock smog outup.
