Looking for a driver's side power mirror glass assembly. Just the mirror no motor.
Thanks

Re: Drivers side power mirror glass

Used to be $7.99 at Western Auto. Itd seriously be worth asking the counter guy at your local Autozone. If they dont have the exact replacement mirror glass, they can probably order it for you. I'd pass on the square of mirrored plastic that says to scissor it to size, but it's up to you.

Rock Auto plug goes here > Try Rock Auto. They almost definitely will have it, but the shipping might drag you over the coals.

Re: Drivers side power mirror glass

Pretty sure the driver's side the mirror and the backing are the same (power/manual). At least the ones I've got kicking around, have both the mounts for the manual cables and the power drive pins.

Hmm... Now I have to decide if I want to dig out a couple to see for myself. Guess that's as good a reason as any to put re-engineering the gutters off until another day...

Re: Drivers side power mirror glass

Weird.

Drivers side power mirror glass-cblln3b.jpg

Granted, this is a power passenger's/manual driver's but it illustrates my point.

Power mirror motor drive pin...

Drivers side power mirror glass-qyvtsdt.jpg

WHAT THE HELL IS THAT! WHAT IS THAT! Is it a socket for a power motor drive pin? But that's clearly a manual mirror? Well maybe it's just a molding protrusion and not actually a fully formed socket for the drive pin...

Nope, it's a fully formed socket for a drive pin.

Sorry, been saving the "Get the F off of my obstacle!" jpg for the right moment, this will have to do. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to be rude about it, but you gotta understand, people have been making me prove I know what I'm talking about for over two decades. It's gotten a little stale.

Perhaps earlier years are different, I don't remember seeing the universal backing on earlier thirdgens, but then I never really looked either. Pretty sure I don't have another manual mirror around, but I'll keep an eye out for another driver's power mirror to check. Wouldn't be the first time GM simplified things by making a piece of plastic so it can go both ways. Maybe I need to find a driver's power mirror housing in the junk pile and verify the sockets line up with a power motor? Idk, sure looks to me like the manual backing is setup to work with a power motor...

Re: Drivers side power mirror glass

I pulled a box of mirrors off the shelf, you know after wading across snake infested waters and facing tribes of hostile cannibals. Think I found parts of about half a dozen driver's power mirrors... So I'll have more info and photos shortly.

Stay Tuned.

The Hovitos were not exactly thrilled that I made off with this box of junk... Great risk to life and limb...

Hmm, already starting to taste my foot in my mouth... Delicious! But they said I can never admit when I'm wrong? Ooops....

So okay, here we have four driver's power mirrors. Interestingly one is different. A closer inspection reveals three have the same part number, and one is different. The different backing appears to be GM part number 104556. The other three are 106626. The 104556 appears to have a molding date 5 (1985) which would seem to fit since one of the sets of mirrors in the box came from an 86. The others are dated 8 (1988 production, 1989 model year) and 0 (1990 production, 1991 model year) and the last isn't legible.

So what conclusion can be reached? The backing appears to be different. The manual backing does have spots for the motor drive pins, but they don't line up with the location of the drive pins of a power mirror motor, which is really confusing. I'll have to dig into that a bit more and see if I can find more on that, later.

The Parts & Illustration Catalog isn't much help either, since GM seems they'd like a person to replace the mirror assembly whole, or the motor, or the glass, but they don't list the glass and the backing as separate part numbers, or detail if they're different. It's possible there's a deeper listing of part numbers in the part number book, but the PDF I have handy of the illustration book chopped the damn page numbers, making it a pain to refer back and forth. That means I have to dig out both 3 ring binders and look them up manually.

At least I get a chance to compare the mirror pods again just for fun... Two of these are obviously power mirror pods, the other two were manual and power, but you'll have to take my word for it. To my eyes the mirror pods when stripped have the exact same mounting pegs for their internal guts. Not relevant to this exact topic, but it's come up before in the past.

PTS, I'm pretty sure I can spare a plastic backing plate from a driver's power mirror, assuming you have a replacement glass. Nearly all the mirror glass in my stash is broken, most of it was cracked when I salvaged the mirrors. If you need one, PM me.

PS, classifieds posts don't count toward post count. I'm not post whoring, I'm jst too lazy to edit.
