Take a look at the old 427 Cobras... they have what looks like a bread-pan that goes between the manifold and carb, and the top seals against the hood.

Anyone ever try making an air pan out of fiberglass? I think that's the route I'm gonna go. Wouldn't be hard to build a backing out of cardboard so I get a nice curved pan that should pull the air in to the carb. I think one out of fiberglass would not transfer as much heat as one out of sheet metal either. Then just slap some of the insulation foam on the edges so I get a good seal to the hood.

show us some pics. im using mild steel or whatever metal we have at school. the reason being its on the elco so i have alot of space in there so heat isnt the biggest problem and i have a aero scoop so it gets real cool in there

Gonna be awhile before I get around to mine. I still don't even have the assembly back from the machine shop yet. I just decided yesturday I didn't like the big lip on the front of the hood so I cut it down a bunch and plastic filled in the rest so the the short lip would be stronger. I'm a good acouple months from fabrication of the air pan, I think.

The one on the very front of the hood (actually it goes around the whole hood). They have some supporting trim on it, probably mostly where they need'd for the molding process and a little add'd strength. Extends off the regular hood around 1" that goes straight down. On a camaro probably wouldn't have gave it a second thought but I figured it might look weird on a firebird since a lot more of the hood is open and the headlight covers are only around 1/8" thick. So I just measured it off, drew my line, took a belt sander to it, and copped it down till it was at the line all the way around the front. That way the hood lip won't look monsterous next to my headlights.
