Oil pan fabrication...?
First of all, I couldn't figure the best place to put this post, so please move it if I chose wrong...
I don't know if I am skilled enough to fabricate the "kicked-out" sump, but I'm sure I can piece together a decent windage screen, trapdoor, and baffle set for my stock pan.
Couldn't I just make a windage tray with some steel screening and some long hinges(?) folded over and bolted together? Also, in the case of trap-doors, what is the best design?
I might be in a little over my head, so just tell me if I am...

i modified a stock pan once, it was a lot of work, way more in time and effort than i thought it was worth after i was done. all i did was cut the sump off and weld on new metal, didn't look as good as i wanted it to either.

But what about a cheap screen windage tray, or maybe some other backyard engineering? I don't have welding equip, so whatever I can bolt together from a hardware store is my limit...

Where your putting this thing is definately not a place for "whatever I can bolt together from the hardware store" Just what a rotating assembly likes is a backed off nut/bolt/duct tape/bailing wire slinging around in the mix
Depending on yr of your block you can get a wide sump oil pan with trap door from summit for $79 and windage trays are usually $20 so for less than $100 and zero thinking, I think this may be a perfect case in point to just purchase instead of making something. Been in that boat one too many times, as I'm sure alot of guys here will relate too:lala:

you can make a crankshaft scraper by hand pretty easily.
thats suppost to be worth a couple hp.... lol.

I've built a few pans. it helps to have an old block to bolt it to so it doesn't warp up when you weld it. I've put trap doors, sumps, and all kinds of baffles in. Without a good welder it's not worth the trouble.

This is an idea I would like to look into. I havent found one for my v6 engine other then the fiero, which isnt the same.
