Anyone fab up there own 12 bolt?

I was just woundering if anyone ever fabbed up there own 12 bolt to fit into a third gen or a 9 inch. I Just have a hard time paying 1800$ for a currie 12 bolt. I know they are good, but if a stock 12 bolt can hold up to my hp. I want to see some pictures.

better off starting with a 9". Its a bitch to weld a steel torque arm bracket to a cast housing center section.

it's as easy to weld to the center section of a rear end as it is to weld and piece od MS. if you want to do it take a look at a few catalogs to see how they do it. you'd need a fixture to hold the axle tubes. i'd build a jig around a thirdgen rear and use it to relocate the brackets to the new rear.

Yeah, i know how to weld cast. I think i may find myself a cheap 12 bolt out of a truck. Them strech to around 60 inch's, bout the same width as a thirdgen. That should hold up to some torque plus some.

truck 12 bolt=no parts, better think about that before you get one. look for a 12 bolt fom a car.

im going to attempt making a 9" after i move back home.... unfortunatly, i keep getting delayed as far as moving.



i have a spare 3rdgen rear, 31 spline truck 9" and a bent 3rdgen rear.. my idea is pretty simple....

make a jig from the spare rear... then take the brackets from the bent rear, then using the jig, weld them to the 9"

the width is very close, but not exact........ but that doesnt matter the slighest... i would have needed 2" spacers for the newer rims anyway.... now i just get 1.75" or whatever it measures out to.

the bracket isnt welded its bolted to it.

Ha, dude thats awsome. I just want mine welded tho. But why a Mopar? Why not a stronger chevy or ford? Just wounder? That is what i am planing on doing tho. Hopefully it will work.

that's sweet! Nice job! 8 3/4 chrysler rears are pretty strong, I built one for my 78 monte carlo. They're a little lighter, have a drop out gear carrier and less drag than a ford rear, no c-clips like a 12 bolt, . Just use the non adjustable wheel bearings so you don't have to adjust them.

well we did it because of cost and my grandfather knew how to do it with one and it was the correct width so we didnt have to narrow this one. It cost about 170 bucks with everything, we got free brakes and stuff and my dad had a spare 489 case, but the gears were bad so unfortunately i had to buy a 1100 center section but my dad paid for half . But cost and knowledge of it is why. The ford is hard to find and i didnt want a stupid 12 bolt,they are hard to change gears, i can change gears in about 4 hrs at most , if i want to go from my 410s to whatever.

I just had an idea. Could someone take the competition engineering fab 9 from Jegs.com and somehow get a torque arm bracket on it? What about the spring perches and lca brackets? Would you be able to extract them from the 10 bolt and weld them onto the fab 9?

I hear this rear end is 60 lbs. lighter than a regular rear. It is $500 and made from chromoly. When all is said and done it seems like it would be cheaper than $1800 and very strong.

That looks like it's just for the housing though. You'd still need the hogshead, axles, carrier, gearset, adjusting rings, and yoke. Might still end up being a little cheaper though, I haven't priced that stuff out in a while.
