Finally making an STB

Ok, I am getting 5' of 1" steel tubing, and some steels plates tommorow and I have some questions. First, I am planning on making a complete arc over my TPI plenum to both ST's, am going to have to have to gut my hood doing it this way? Also doing it this way how much clearance should I have under the the STB and center of the plenum?

OK, I got the metal but the 1" inch steel tubing ended up being 1/5 cm. (approx. 1/8") thick. Is that to thin for an STB? And will I be able to weld it to a 3/8" plate?

Any answers on the the first questions would be helpfull also.

Thanks

Well we finally bent the tubing and got it to the point where we can weld it (Actually get someone to weld it) What do you guys think? Oh yeah, I already checked the hood clearence, and it is good.

I made one for my car last week. Used a piece of 3/4" tubing 44" long, 1.25" x 6" mounting plates, and two pieces of 1/2" steel plate cut to shape. The 1/2" plate I used to move the bar up about 1.5" above the intake. As an added benefit it also holds up the underhood insulation now. Turned out real nice, painted it red, smoothed out the welds. While I was at it I also made a lower frame brace from 1/4" plate and a piece of 1" tubing, as well as an adjustable pahnhard bar. This summer I'm going to make a new transmission crossmember that moves the torque arm off the trans tailhousing, as well as a tubular torque arm. I'll try and get some pics of the panhard bar, STB, and wonder bar.

When you say triangulate, do you mean make it a 3 pt? Once I put in the 350 I plan on buying a 3 pt brace.

no you need to have at least two mounting points on each side.

Ok, I will add some this weekend. Do you think that would make it handle better?

that depends on the condiction of your other suspension parts(bushings front and rear, steering componets)
the mounting point needs to have two(at the least)on each strut tower to prevent them from flexing.as you may know it's that flexing you want to prevent

post some detailed pics for those who want to try there hand at alittle Fabrication.

Finally got some photos scanned. Here's the STB. Like I posted before, just a length of 3/4" pipe, 1/2" plate supports, and 1/4" plate footings. I'll post up the wonder bar and panhard bar later.
