Notchback ideas?

I was thinking about using a fiberglass truck topper for materials. My notchback "hatch" would look very much like a factory notchback, only the whole hatch would not hinge. The hinge(s) would be placed at the front of the notch. I would make the back window come straight down and have a solid piece of metal welded across to make the back window "sill". I'm kinda new to fiberglassing I've got it in my head that I want to do this though.
If anyone has suggestions please let me know, the main problem I think would be finding the appropriate weather seal to cover the hinged parts and keep water out of the car.

Could you possibly use a sill and trunk lid setup from a 3rd gen 'vert? If you use those parts that are already made to fit, you'd be looking at welding in the metal bar for the sill and fabricating a fixed rear window.

sounds like a hell of an idea im not too hip on the notchbacks but everyone has there own preference but sounds like your on the right path there if you would use the trunk and sill plate for the vert you would be a step ahead .......go for it and let us know what happens...

if you want something to mod, i have a tojan notchback just sitting in my gurage. its been there a few years and i have no desire to use it. if you know anything about the tojan notchbacks, you know they bolt up perfect but have over hang to play with. i've had a few people look at it and get different ideas with it. if you live in new england, your welcome to come by and take a look.

if your notchback isn't factory, which one do you own? i have another notch on my camaro. its the ferrari style with the vents in the back. i'm very pleased with it since its the only one i've seen in person. i know a guy who has a notch with the scoops on the side. absolutly awesome, and i've never seen or heard of another notch like it.

oh, also, i have the rear tail light piece to go with the hatch. if you know where to find tojan lights it would be a perfect piece to play with.

where can you find a decent priced notchback hatch for sale? all the ones I found are not worth the money.

I got mine from Motion Glass about a year and a half ago and it seems to fit a good as you can expect with fiberglass parts. If I remeber correctly I paid about $750. for it. I'd have to check for sure when I get home. I know I have $3300 in all the glass I bought....Hood,wide body and rear hatch.

I think if you look around you can find the hatches cheaper but I don't like alot of the ones I've seen. This one is off Hawk's site and it'll run you $649. but I don't like the look of it. Don't know how it fits?

i believe the ones from hawks and motion are the same. both flat decks with the sail ending right before the end of the deck. the one i have extends the same, but has a bump with the iroc hood vents on the back. its kinda neat.

the tojan extends all the way to the end of the deck and is actually a 2 piece notch. it looks very heavy but actually A LOT lighter then the factory glass and i believe its a bit lighter then my other notch. it has an over hang onto the sailpanels of the fbody, leaving room for fabrication. the end of the deck comes off an at angle and has a small space between it and the plastic ontop of the tail lights

i will try and get a picture of it up by thursday.

How much weight would one of these fiberglass notchbacks save off of the standard hatch on a Camaro? I've been thinking of the same plans for the Camaro I'm picking up soon. I would think that huge glass hatch would be really damn heavy on these things, and I figured a notch should shave a lot of weight..

If you look at the picture the sides on the one from Hawk's go the full length of the hatch but the one on my car from Motion only go back about 10 inches. I'm not a big fan of the one from Hawk's it looks like on of the wissota modified they run on the east coast

put it this way, taking off my glass was a hassle and i had to use both hands and take a mild brake from walking it from my car to the gurage. if the tojan notch wasn't so bulky, i could pick it up one handed. not only does it save weight, its something you don't normaly see on a 3rd gen. every notch i see i stare untill the car is out of my sight. even if its a POS

as for the hawks and motion glass notches, thats is the only difference between the 2. i think i mentioned it in a previous post. but yes, you are correct. the sail panels are longer on the hawks hatch.

and i still have yet to see anyone with the scoops on the side of their notch

I was wondering the same thing. I'm in the Chicago area and don't even have the Camaro yet.. lol! Supposed to pick it up this weekend but seeing as I just got a '94 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R last night for free (because it needs quite a bit of work), I might focus on that. We'll see though.

i wish i did. its on a purple GTA that i see once every couple of months so it will be VERY hard to grab a picture. its really sick looking, i wish he'd trade me. i think it would look odd on a camaro though, but totaly a TA style hatch. the scoops are like low pro, kinda like those roundish hood scoops on drag cars. i think it was a custom made hatch. all he needs is a fiero GT wing to finish it off, he begged me for mine the last time i saw him

as for the tojan hatch, i couldn't get a photo of it today. prob on saturday i'll load it up and see what you guys think. like i said before, i have no desire to use it now that i have my other notch so your welcome to take it off my hands.

little late but heres the picture of the tojan back i promised. its dirty in the picture, but primed and ready for paint after a good cleaning. if you look at the sides, you can see where the sailpanel flairs are. thats the part i was talking about fabbing.

i also have the tjoan light assembly. if someone wants this notch, i'll give them the lights with it also. lights will require a bit of fab work and they will only work with a TA body style, not a camaro.

Got mine from the junk yard here in San Antonio. Looked like the Firebird had been sitting for a few years. First time I take my 16 year old to the yard and he finds a notchback. 29.95 out the door.

Jim.
