millermatic 251 to tig ?

I was thinking about getting a miller tig spool gun for my 251 mig welder and was wondering if any one has this setup and how well does it work? I know it needs a differant gas mixture and a polarity change as far as setup goes but, is it a good product?

Spool guns are used primarily to weld alluminum because the wire is so soft it often binds and bunches up through a regular mig gun with a long cable. The spool gun eliminates that by reducing the wire travel to within a few inches from the weld.

whqat are you wanting to do? run soft wire or run hard wire? if you're wanting to run soft wire in a mig gun use a teflon liner and increase the tip size by .010 or so. keep the gun as straight as you can and you may not need the spool gun. best set up for sofe wite mig welding is something like a cobramatic, push/pull gun feeder set up.

I just want to run the soft wire (aluminum) all I want to know is if the spool gun is a good built unit. they look kinda cheap quality in person. and how well they work.

no one here has the miller spoolgun?

I have a spool gun for my Miller matic 251 and it works great for welding aluminum. I haven't had any issues with it. I just have to remember to adjust at the spool gun instead of the welder. lol

You'll also need 100% Argon to weld aluminum. The CO2 steel mix isn't a good enough shielding gas.

The way my machine is set up, the speed control on the machine changes the spool gun feed. I assumed the millermatic was the same way ?

I don't even use TIG anymore. Spool gun and 100% argon. Intakes, trailers, brackets - welds them all.
