wider front track, need advice

ok, so its going out of control lol....

the car is going to paint in a few months, im going to widen the front fenders to match the width of the rears, and make custom louvered vents into the tops of the fenders to release air pressure. im already using a 2 inch spacer up front with vett wheels, i would rather us no spacer at all, or at most a 1 in.. but do to the wider fenders, the track width up front needs to go wider as well, im already doing custom built coilovers and brembo 6 piston brakes 14 inch rotors blah blah blah.... anyway, due to my coilovers i need to make custom camber plates anyway for my setup, im thinking i should make a fully adjustable lower control arm set that is actualy 2inches wider then stock, and obviously make the tie rods longer as well, and make the camber plate to correct the strut angle? any ideas????

anyone with in put will be greatly appreciated

Just curious. Why would you want to widen the front track width?

As far as your tech questions. I'd probably use a tubular k-member, 4th gen rack (way long), and make custom attachment points for LSX spindles and coil overs.

I'm surprised with all the aftermarket k-members and brake combos for mustangs, nobody has had the stones to make one that incorporates coil over and LSX spindles for bolt on big brakes. With adjustable control arms and shock towers one could change the track width with ease.

Re: wider front track, need advice

thanks joe, by lsx spindles, do you mean 4th gen?
i want to make my front end just a little wider, after all, wider is always better if handeling is a consern.
and i would like to vent to tops of my front fenders, but in order to do that i need to pull the two inches on each side , which would creat a odd gap with the wheels and i dont want to run some funky offset wheel with a huge lip, i want it to look as close to stock as possible, make it nice and clean.
i will have to build everything one off anyway, and im already building most of it as is , so i figure while im already here, why not? my main issue is the lower control arms , they need to be tweo inches wider then stock, i was thinking to buy a tubular set and cut the bushing mounts out, and instal bungs which i already have and extra long hiems so its adjustable. what do you think

Re: wider front track, need advice

I understand what you want to do - moving the track out should (if done properly) improve handling and balance.

Keep this in mind though - most paths to this include widebody fenders with wider wheels with less backspacing to push the wheels out past the factory wheel wells into the new fenders. As an example, you may run a 11" wide wheel with a 5.25" BS to fill out a 2" fender extension, where you would run a 9.5" wheel with a 5.25" BS with a factory fender.

Re: wider front track, need advice

right, but my plan is already to go and inch or two wider on the front fenders, matching the front fender width to the rear width.. and giving the car a little modern look with the vents and added suttle body lines..the idea is simple, it may even fix my acramen angle issue as well

changing the front suspension design takes big *****. and a healthy knowlege of geometry. hats off to you.something i will mention .be careful how you load the wheel bearings.they dont like side thrust ect.moving the wheel further out (ie spacers)puts un common stresses on the spindles/bearings.

Re: wider front track, need advice

sooo there is a problem, i can move the lower control arms outward without causing strut clearance issues, do to how wide i want the front wheels to be and the coilovers i am building, i cant go wider without pushing the upper strut twards the engine to lay it down a little, but that would destroy the srcrub radius, si i kind feel stuck at the moment,

Re: wider front track, need advice

yea , it does look like we ended up going in the same direction haha thanks buddy
, im building the lower control arms about 1.5 inches wider then stock. and cutting and pulling the fender to go with the new track width. then doing the same to the rears to match. wider is always better lol

here the the front coilovers as of now. finally finished the lower mounts a few weeks ago, i orderd my uniball cups and misalignment spacers, but the cups ended up beig the wrong size...ugh.. so im shipping them back and getting another set, so unfortunately i cant make the camber plates yet ...fml lol

Re: wider front track, need advice

Looking good , my suspension is the next thing on the list all I have is wimpy kyb AGX all corners ,1.75 lowering springs , and stock Iroc roll bars the biggest ones that came stock, poly bushings , upgraded camber plate and lower control arms with relocation brackets.
Im contemplating coilover or ground control setup
Then go 10.5 width wheel upfront and been looking at some fender flares or just extend the original fenders but idk

what spring rates you going to start with ?

Re: wider front track, need advice

your suspension set up doesn't seam bad.. im sure it handles well. i just am fed up with being just another third gen... everyone gets the same parts, and the same basic look... im not in to that... i want more.. i want to keep up with the new z28 . i was going to just cut and flare my fenders but last night io found a site that sells a partial flare set.. its the upper half of the front fenders and rear quarters and you have to graph them on... im kinda on the fence with them.. im not sure i like the way they look, i feel they are missing the oem body lines, so im not so sure... with coilovers keep in mind its harder to get a wide wheel and tire in there, im staying with 9.5 wide in the front because of it. im hoping toi do a 10.5 or 11.5 in the rear.. or something in that realm. the 4 inches of added track width should be nice also lol.... i wonder how it will corner lol.. the fenders i found , say they are 1.25 inches wider in the front, and 1.75 in the back, which i also dont like. im sure i can get another half inch out of them... if i can make my front track width wider by 1.75 on each side, that would be nice... my rear springs are starting out at 175.. and i think i might do a 325 up front but nit sure yet , i should get my sprung and un sprung weight and go from there. im using the hotchkis bar up front and an iroc bar in the back. im going to used the qa1 adj torque arm.and i boxed in my lower control arms, but ill make new ones later on. but everything else i made or making my self

If I'm not mistaken those are custom coilovers, correct? Who made them? And I'd really like to know where you got your lower mounts for the strut inserts. I've looked high and low for a set and couldn't find anyone who was even willing to make them for me.

Re: wider front track, need advice

well, lol, the coilover? i made them... took me and my budddy a year and a half to make all the parts, internals and all.. the lowers on the i mad from an old pair of struts i cored out on a lathe and made a threaded insert to thread on to the strut body so you can adjust ride hight without changing spring rate... im almost done with the camber plates, need to cut them out on the plasma cam and weld em up.

the lower bodys took houres to make lol learning to do internal threads on your own with just figure it out as you go takes time lol... good thing there was alot of beer hahaha

Re: wider front track, need advice

Not to be off topic but did you consider going with a double a-arm setup? It makes wide tires and proper suspension geometry easier. I have CAD files that I would be willing to share that use a corvette c6 upright and is setup to be 4" wider track than stock with zr1 17x10.5 wheels. At the bottom of my build thread is a teaser pic of the CAD https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/members-camaros/658746-project-brown-camaro-picture.html

i wouldnt be upposed to that, sorry for not being on here much at all, the shop is so busy ..i was trying to make every thing a strait bolt in set up due to the fact the im doing this to my daily driver and dont have another car to drive while i cut the front ende appart. i was doing a full bolt in kit that i can just swap strait over to and be done. the front struts are now finished , top plates and all.. now i need to make my lower arms and tie rods and ind a 4th gen rear end with disc
