cold air intake options?
cold air intake options?
Hello, new to the board, just purchased an 88 iroc, a 5.7 with 50,000 orig miles. I have done some searching on here and can't seem to find exactly what I am looking for. Sorry if this is a repeat question but I am unclear on a few things.
First I would like to install some sort of cold air intake and cant get straight answers from SLP. I was going to purchase there kit but cannot get them to tell me if there is any major modifying to do. I do not want to cut any holes in the car etc....or do anything that is not irreversable. Anyone know if the SLP kit requires any large holes to be cut? I don't want to relocate the battery either. Also I have seen on this site where there is a homemade intake made in the tech section just for tpi camaros but it appears that the fog lights will have to be removed for this to work. Is this true? I do not want to remove the fog lights, so if this is necessary then this idea will not work for me. Any other suggestions would be great, especially photos would help. I am very meticulous about how things are done to my cars.
And last, I cannot find a supplier that sells adjustable fuel pressure regulators for the 5.7 TPI. Anyone know where I should look. Sorry if this has been gone over before, I am not a computer person so I have a little trouble with the search engine, I am also a very old school person and this is the first computer controlled car I have owned in more than 20 years. So in a sense, this is a new car to me. Thanks for any help,,, Larry.

You can leave the fog lights in I did, it would be more efective with out though. The air that is redirected from the fog light holes normaly helps cool the radiator, make sure your bottom air dam is in good shape to keep the air going through the radiator.
Thanks man
Thanks Wayne, I may just go that route and leave the fog lights in as long as I can do a good enough job to satisfy myself. I can't get any answers from SLP, guess they want me to spend money first, who knows.
I also assume K&N also makes replacement filters for the stock air intake on these things. I have not checked on that yet.
I am starting to figure out the search feature slowly, I think I have found enough info on the adjustable regulator, everyone seems to like the holley version for this application, I will just go that route. I think the hooker #2055 headers are also the most popular, I have used hooker in the past on my other cars and they have excellent fit and quality, sounds like a good choice to me. I also found the part # listed here to run a pulley and delete the smog pump. I still need to run up to the local dealer and make sure this pulley is still available. I may also remove the converter too but this computer stuff bothers me a little.
Not sure what the computer will do with the smog pump and converter removed. I will save that for last.
Man as far as computer chips everyone here seems to be pretty split on that. So far I have only found Hypertech still making chips for these. Guess that will be ok with the few bolt ons I have planned. I have no plans of getting inside the motor unless something happens. Just the easy bolt on stuff to perk it up a little bit. I don't see any reason for a custom burn chip for the small things I am doing. Am I wrong in thinking this?
There is one thing I am not clear on, please forgive me for this long post. I want a cooler thermostat, i also know the fans have to turn on and off to work within thermostat range. I saw that hypertech makes a fan switch that would turn the fans on sooner. Question.......would I really need this if I am going with the Hypertech chip? I was thinking they would program there chip to work the fans in conjunction with a cooler thermostat.
Sorry if this is a repeat. When I get settled in with this car I will post here and properly introduce myself to the board.
Thanks for any input,,,,,,,Larry.

This is what I was running Hyper stage two chip ( changes the fan on and off to work with a 160 thermostat), the converter will not effect the computer didn't on mine. I removed the smog pump after the engine install and diffrent chip now. Smog pump, I just removed the pump and the same belt that I use with the under drive pully works fine. Done this on 2 cars both with 383/ 388s. K&N makes the filters and several others.
converter
Thanks a bunch Wayne, I was hoping to find someone here helpfull.
I was thinking of removing the converter first and leaving the pump for now until I get the pulley or different belt. Is this okay?
I was just worried the computer would have fits.
I can't thank you enough for you time. I just want to make some decent changes that all work together. later, Larry.

You can remove the converter with out any problems. If you put a 3" cat back system on it is easy. A 24" long 3" dia pipe expanded on both ends to fit over a 3" pipe. Remove cat install pipe to Y pipe cut the bolt flange off the cat back system and slip into the pipe. weld or clamps

If you're looking into an adjustable fuel pressure regulator. Go with Holley. Thats what I have and many people consider it to be the best for TPI. I've heard that the BBK and Crane ones, while cheaper, are a pain in the *** to adjust and generally arnt that great.
holley regulator
Thanks for the response White Knight. I was doing some searching and you are right, most here seem to agree that the holley is the better unit and easier to adjust. I am not the kind of person to pinch pennies when it comes to playing with cars so the price does not bother me, if it is better, I will just pony up the money, do it once and do it right is the way I like to approach things. I am considering buying all the equipment to burn my own chips as well since the general consensis on here does not like the aftermarket chips offered. I am an excellent tuner when it comes to old cars but have never tuned one using a computer so this will be a new experience for me. Learn as I go I guess.
Thanks again, Larry.
