how's this for fabrication?




3" x .083" stainless pipe with 1350 weld yokes and U-joints

 

How did you balance it?

 

took it to a driveshaft shop in Houston.

 

where did you get the yokes?

 

Nice welds... did you weld it on an orbital?

How heavy is it compared to the chrome-moly?

I love the shine of stainless. Nice job

welds I would assume were done on an orbital. my dad gave it to our welder and said, "weld this up."

Compared to chrome-moly its slightly heavier but its still not as bad as I thought. The tube itself only weighs 8 lbs, but by the time you add the weld yokes, 1350 u-joints, and trans yoke, my guess is it weighs close to 20 lbs.

but, I can handle the increased weight for the increased strength I've got now. now if only the rearend would hold...

 

Is this one heavier then a stock drive shaft.

 

yeah its a little heavier. Just the tube itself is 3 lbs heavier. The stainless tube weighs about 8 lbs, the stocker weighs about 5 lbs. Plus the added weight of the larger yokes and u-joints. I'd say its about 5 lbs more than stock.

What kind of stainless is it? Looks sweet but it could be anything from weaker then steel/chromoly to significantly stronger.

Is it still fabrication if you handed a stack of parts over to someone to put them together? Seems more like management or project supervising…

 

only part that was "handed over" was the welding, still did the assembly of the u-joints and had already pressed in the weld yokes

its 304 Stainless

 

Is that where you beat it against the floor till you think it’s fully seated?


So it should be about the same or slightly stronger then comparable mild steel, slightly heavier and a little touchier WRT to the weld joints…

Still looks sweet… I’m assuming that that’s 3” DOM, what did that piece run you? Should polish up beautifully

 

hey now, I may be from Texas, but we're not that backwoods around here.


Yes it is DOM. Since my dad deals in metal everyday we got it for $8 a foot. Got 2 10' joints of it.

 

You know, it’s funny… there is stuff that I would never dare doing on someone else’s car that I would do on mine, it fits that “this seems really wrong but I can’t see how this would really screw anything up or I’ve never had a problem with it”

2x10’… that’s enough for 6 driveshafts if you cut carefully… not a bad deal, so about $90 in parts + labor… could probably sell them for about $250
