Cool table idea w/ American Racing TTII wheel

A friend of mine gave me a brand new 18"x9.5" Torque Thrust II wheel for free. UPS dropped it off at his house, didnt have his name or address on the shipping label, and they never came back for it after a year. So he gave it to me and what Im thinkin about doin is gettin a used but good shape tire, mounting it on there, bolting an actual wheel hub to the wheel, and making some legs out of either old axle shafts or something that can bolt onto the hub. I KNOW some of you guys out there have either done this ir have thought about it, and Im lookin for ideas on the legs. This is gonna be a pretty clean project, Ima put it my living room (it will be degreased and painted of course). I also dont want it to be too heavy, the wheel doesnt way that much, and the tire and hub cant way that much, so its the legs that Im worried about weighing too much. ANY ideas and input would be greatly appreciated. Heck, I was about to just bolt the wheel to an old axle and weld some tubes at the bottom for the base, but this guy gave me the hub idea wo I can have a rotating coffee/end table

If it were me: I'd either sell it or save up for three more.

But that would make a pretty cool table.

it wont fit a third gen though, its got mad backspacing, like 6" or so. I forget exactly, but I know I tried to fit it on mine and it didnt work out. I would sell if it I needed the money, but things are finally goin pretty good here at the new house, and now Im just bored

but what yall think would be best for the table legs? I havent found a hub just yet, but most of em Ive seen have three threaded holes to mount to the strut or whatever. Someone said get some looooong threaded rods, thread em im there and bend it out a little. Then weld some rods in between the legs to make sure they dont spread out. U get what Im sayin? Either way Im leaning towards some sort of tripod design, but I am open to all suggestions, even weird ones.

Here's a VERY quick drawing of what Im thinkin so far.

I was actually thinkin about a shop stool at first, but then you would be sittin on the "eye candy" and wouldnt really see much of it. I figured a table like this youd see it pretty clearly. What did you do for the legs on your stools, anything extravagant or just basically a bar stool with a wheel? Im interested in how you approached it.

I have a table made out of a rim, my buddy made it for me for a wedding present. Ofcourse it's and end table but it's sooo sweet maybe u might change your mind cause rubber tires in the house are kinda gross
use the rim as a base, find a 5" od chrome tube about 3feet tall ( depending on how tall you want your table) Now find yourself a sweet steering wheel and a piece of glass the same size as the steering wheel. Use a piece of ready rod to connect the steering wheel through the 5" chrome tube to the rim and glue the glass to the steering wheel.
Now you have the coolest end table ever.
I'll try and post a picture tomorrow.

that does sound like a cool lookin table. I dont know if thats the direction I want to go in though. I didnt think about how the tire would look, or even smell, till you said something. Maybe I can soak it in Pinesol before I mount it . I wanted to have the wheel on the top portion just so I dont have to rig up something to go through the center cap, that way the wheel is the main center of attention.

I took the wheel and took 4 2.5 inch steel rods and welded them at an angle. Not comforable, but look neater than shiz.

That's a sweeeet idea. I agree, if I was single or had a game room, the whole thing would be made from auto parts. Like the furniture John Ramos(the artist) makes(made?). Or the couches on the cheesy 80's TV show "My 2 Dads". I think that would ROCK!

Im still havin trouble findin a vette tire (appx. 275/45 17) thats in decent shape. All the ones we got are bald, no ones come in yet with a nail or anything wanting a new tire. But I did have another brainstorm today . Someone suggested using some LCA from 98-99 Tahoes as the legs. Theres some kinda defect in them that makes em creek real bad, so we get TONS of them that we end up throwing out. I also found a perfect steel wheel, 4 lug, for a cobalt that was sent to us damaged, and GM didnt want it back. The lip on the backside is slightly bent, thats it. I was thinkin about using that wheel at the bottom for the base, then have the LCA come up as a tripod resting on the side of the wheel. Heres another GREAT drawing, still about the same.

I still dont know how I would attach the LCAs to the hub assem.

Ive never heard of Ramos, Ill have to check him out, maybe get some ideas.

I don’t like the tire idea either…. Forget the smell, that will eventually go away (or is it that you’ll stop noticing it?), but everything that touches it will get a black mark on it that will get worse as the rubber starts breaking down with ozone and UV light. Tire dressing… well will just make things messier.

If you want to use a steel rim for a base just find a piece of roughly 3” tube and weld it to the wheel’s hub and then weld the top to the hub that you want to use if you want it to turn or to another steel plate that you can mount studs in (unless I had some old studs sitting around I would probably just drill and tap holes and then use some lug/bolts from some of the german cars).

Similar idea but never intended to be in a “nice” place so it’s not really finished nicely (I would have removed the rust off the post and probably cut up the rim to make it look cool and painted the whole base if it was), this is my welding table, steel wheel that I found, I don’t know, somewhere, 3” tube from a rusty old basketball net that my brother’s landlord was throwing out and the top is the center plate out of a tap robot that I disassembled when one of the local big banks was liquidating their machine room:

how about you take a rear end out of the a car that has the same bolt pattern as the wheel, cut it rite in the center of the punkin then weld the punkin to some diamond plate for a base. then bolt the wheel to the studs and walla you have a table.

you may have to cut the axle a little shorter also

Im still not sure on exactly how I want to go about doin this. Right now I got the base lookin exactly like the above pic with a 14" wheel and a length of 3" exhaust pipe. Then I got the TTII wheel with a hub mounted to it. Im not sure if I wanna just weld/attach the hub to the pipe and be done with it or what. Someone on here made a remark about bumping the tire and leaving marks, I didnt really even think about that part. The smell I could get over, but if Im leavin for work one day and I get a black mark down the side of my pants I think that would be a bad day

I'd do it. My friend had a couple 20" wheels from a Dodge Ram that he used to make a TV stand, pretty cool idea I think.

Im still lookin for a decent used 17 tire to mount, but havent come across one yet. As for the legs, I got some threaded rod and screwed em into the 3 holes in the hub, bent them out a little and Im making a triangular base for it. I ran out of ideas for the base because I decided against using another wheel for the bottom. The digi cam is at my dads house, so Illt ry and get some pix up of what I got so far.

Idk I like the idea of the tire... The only way you need to worry about the tire is if you make the glass too small...

ya, Im gonna probably get at least a 24" glass. Gotta wait to see what tire I can come up with.

heres a rough sketch on what the base is gonna look like. The three pieces are identical, and make a perfect triangle (my math terminology is a bit rusty), 60 degrees at each corner. The black dots are where the threaded rods are gonna go through, 12" apart from each other. Lay a nice weld around the triangulated pieces and tack weld the rods in place, and walah!

I have a coffee table that consists of a tire from Dale Earnhardt's car, and a 36" round glass. I keep intending to get the wheel and mount the tire to the wheel, but as of yet I haven't.

So anyway... on to my point. I wouldn't worry a heck of a lot about table legs. By the time you mount a 10" or 11" tire onto that wheel, it's already going to be sticking up high enough to make a good coffee table. At the most, you'd probably want to lift it up just another couple inches. My tire is a 12" stock car tire, and I set it directly onto the floor, and it's a good height for a coffee table.

Man I got lucky today. Guy in an 03 Z06 came in the body shop, curbed both passenger side wheels. Scuffed em up and tore the rear tire. Front tire is in perfect shape, but he wanted to replace it anyways. 265/XX(maybe 40?)ZR17 Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar. Perfect for my project!! 265 oughta stick out enough to lay a piece of glass on top, right? IIRC my wheel is 9.5" wide.

About the legs, Im just gonna leave it as is for now. If I can get ingenious idea down the road, ok. But for now, itll do. I keep forgettin to get my dads digi cam, Ill try and do that this weekend.

If any more of you guys have, or know someone who has, a table kinda like this, try and get some pics for me. Im curious as to what else people have come up with.

i remember reading somewhere that back in the 70s when ford was doing formula 1 racing they would use blown motors and put glass boxes around them and sell them as coffe tables.

i bet it was pricey as hell but it would be cool to have a engine under your coffee table!

FINALLY GOT SOME PICS!!!!!!

now just gotta get a BIG piece of plexiglass and cut it into a circle. Figured it would be best used for a small garage work table/cup holder. What cha think?? Still debating about the legs.

I always thought this was kind of slick… it’s a buick/rover aluminum V8 that was cleaned up and polished and used as a table:
