Re: Roll Bar Install

you ran your back bars a little more spread out than I did, if you would have moved them 2" in more then the whole plate can be welded to the gas tank hump instead of mounting the tab on that low channel section.

I agree with the mounting. Directly over the shock & spring location, is the best for everything to function correctly, IMHO. Are you doing any door bars? Head loop? Or just the 4 pt?

What brand cage did you go with?

Re: Roll Bar Install

Maybe I am the only one to do this but I mounted my rear bars where he did but where it met up with the hoop I angled them towards the out side of the car. Kind of trying to trangulate the cage.

BUT, in a compression sense, front to rear, you have actually WEAKENED them, in regards to the strength they provide.

Think of it this way. If you push directly on top of a bar, it is strong. Hard to compress.

Now, set it at a 45 degree angle, and push. It'll collapse much easier.

Try it with a soda straw. End to end, it won't compress, at an angle, it'll fold easily.

Triangulation is used as reinforcement for square spaces. It is stronger than nothing, but not as strong as it could be. As the suspension pushes on the mounting point, it is like pushing on that soda straw.

Stephen,
You make a good point except for one thing. The bars are already at a 45 degree angle. Me angling mine towards the outside may not have helped but it should be just as strong as running them straight back. Or am I wrong?

Re: Roll Bar Install

Those rear bars are mounted roughly where I had mine on the rear part of the floor but I had the upper mounts more to the outside of the main hoop.

Well, I was more referring to the pressure from below, being transferred to the upper loop. The way they are designed, they have a straight shot, through the bar, to the upper loop.

It was more of the sideways angle I was a bit concerned about, rather than the up/down angle. Make sense?

But your sideways angles are minimal.

Thats an odd response. Wouldn't you want the bars over the rear spring mounts? I mean how much strain is really on your shocks?

Re: Roll Bar Install

Do you plan on putting the rear seats back in? if so you may run into an issue with the seat back hitting the rear bars. I had thos same problem. It was a brain fart on my part and only found out the hard way after it was as welded in. I ended up having to cut out the rear bars and have a custom set made up so I could fit my rear seats back in the car. Here is a pic o fmy setup:

shocks/springs there close enough the 6x6 plate spreads the load anyways.

Re: Roll Bar Install

I installed mine, not to be track legal, but as a way to tie the front to the rear and they don't get in the way AT ALL. Not once. I re-cut the door bars to install lower so you don't have to step over them, then I never put in the loop cross bar, and finally I just installed the bars straight back to about the top of the spring perches.

Honestly not got in the way once. EVER, not even when cleaning to get ready for shows. now I have an out of the way 6 point and SFC, car is stiff as hell.

Great way to go and i would recomend it to anyone making GOOD power.
