Dual alternators
Ok so ive heard of a few people who swap out their A/C compressor to add in another alternator. I'd like another alternator, however I don't wanna lose my A/C (its a necessity.) So I was wondering if there was an alternator that would fit in where the smog pump fits? Is it a special order type item or is it off of another vehicle?
Thanks in advance guys.

Re: Dual alternators
Why do you want dual alternators?
I'm using a larger output alternator to get more juice, 140A out of a CS144. It slips in nicely in a V-belt car.
Do a search on the electronics board to see the thread I posted in. Lots of good pictures and info if you're interested.

Re: Dual alternators
i get a substantial parts discount to stock replacement parts. bigger alternator is not stock and i then have to buy an AIR delete pulley.

Re: Dual alternators
Stock replacement parts? The CS144 I mentioned is the stock alternator for a 1994 Chev lumina van. Or Caprice, or Pontiac Transport van, etc etc. I got mine for $50 at an auto wreckers, but if you get a discount at a parts store you could get it new for.... $150?
Oh, I thought you had V-belts, in that case you don't need a "delete" pulley.

Re: Dual alternators
the Lumina is also a van, its real name is the "Lumina APV" but for all intents and purposes it was a van on a Lumina chassis (twas an ugly beast too.)
So will the Lumina van alternator fit a serp belt setup? (For clairfication, the engine i'm puttin in is from an '88 L98.)

Re: Dual alternators
Yea, there's a Lumina car and Van, don't ask me why, neither one was particularly special.
They use a serp belt stock. I swapped the pulley to a V-belt one and it fit into a V-belt setup with only minor tweaking on the brackets.
I think it's an equally common swap on serp cars, but the bracket modification is slightly more involved. Actually, most information online for this swap is directed at swapping it onto a serp belt car.
It also requires one 35ohm or thereabouts resistor to be soldered inline.
Do a google search on F-body CS-144. There's a thread on here, and a tech article on another 3rd gen camaro website with a lot of good info. I'm at work now, but if no one can find it I can dig it up later.

Also, there's a few versions of the CS-144, I think a 105A, a 120A, and the 144A version. I forget now how to tell which is which (big surprise, it's a subtle difference...) But the way to ID them is listed somewhere online...

Re: Dual alternators
or you could go to o'riely's auto parts or autozone and get a rebuilt 100A for 60 bucks. They go higher too. Why do you need such a powerful alternator? subs or something?

Re: Dual alternators
yeah i got a couple of 12s and i use em all the time (always have it cranked up) so the alternator get quite a workout. I figure 2 alternators running 90 A would last more than twice as long as one, and how cool would it be to have the only camaro on the block with dual alts?

Re: Dual alternators
more alternators = more drag = less power and economy. Just get one 100A and it will be fine.
