Subframe material

Hey guys,

Does anyone know what size tubing is used for subframes, both the diameter of the tubing and the wall thickness of it ?

i assume its 1.25, it looks smaller then your average 1.5 for roll cages.

if anyone can let me know that would be great

Thanks, Keith

Better than being deleted (threads aren't deleted), you can share your findings with the rest of the class. I'm sure it's posted elsewhere, but it never hurts to have it recently posted at the top of the Forum.

Re: Subframe material

I never made mine but I think it's 2" x 2" x .134" (or less) wall square tubing. It doesn't need to be very heavy.

Roll bars are 1-3/4" tube. Roll cages are mostly 1-5/8" tube.

Re: Subframe material

Are you talking about the car's 'subframe' or subframe connectors?

Spohn's are 1.75" OD 0.120" wall thickness round steel tubing of unknown to me yield strength. UMI's are 2.00" x 1.25" 0.120" wall thickness rectangular steel tubing of unknown yield strength as well. IIRC my SSM connectors are 2.0 x 1.5 0.120 wall but weak side rather than strong side in orientation, 36ksi yield strength from what I found on them years ago.

That is a bit on the thin side unless it is 4130 material.

When I made mine I used tubing that was 1 3/4" DOM. The wall thickness is .134 The mounting plates on the front are 7ga (3/16") mild steel and the rear mount is attached with a two part mount system. The first part was welded in prior to the SFC and is a U shape part that was welded in 360 degrees and form fitted in there. It was about 7" long. Then the rear of the SFC slid up in there and was welded along the sides and bottom. (hard to explain but worked out great and made for a perfect fit!)

I have a air/hyd mandrel bender. So you can do it different but this was how mine were made.

See attached links for pictures and fabrication of the SFC's
