Finished my cage

I finished the cage in my car and got the interior back in it. It took longer to take the interior out and back in then it did to do the cage. I left the door bars off because I'm fat and didn't want to be climbing over them. I will eventually put a swing out or bolt in/out deal on them tell me what you think.

Re: Finished my cage

looks good! was it a kit or did you make ti from scratch? is it legal to have the main hoop leaning like that?

good job though!

same reason i didnt do the door bars except im not fat

cant see your welds but they dont seem big, mig or tig welded? and your hoop seems tilted back too much... isnt there a max angle on the hoop being tilted/angled? looks good tho, nice job. reason u didnt want tranny tunnel bars?

Re: Finished my cage

Its a Wolf Race Craft out of my friends forth gen. The tube to tube joints are tig and the tube to plate and plate to floor are mig. The track I go to doesn't have a very good tech, I ran in the mid to high 10's all last year with out a cage at all so the angle is more for my comfort and visual preference than meeting rules.(I didn't want to see the cage from the side of the car with the window down) With my helmet on and my head against the head rest there is about 1'' of clearance to the main hoop up top.The seat is in its normal position and the cross bar is touching the back of it. As for the trans bars my Wife and daughter like to go on cruises with me so I throw the back seat in and the daughter gets in back.

Re: Finished my cage

wow not safe to have them in the back. if you care about them at all dont let them back there. ur looking at killing someone. even with padding on the bars if they hit them it will split there heads open etc and break bones. its not safe to have ppl in the back of a car with a cage. do not stick them back there even with seatbelts. just looking out for u

understood about the hoop. mine has that "u can see it from the side of the car but it was done correctly. even angled it back 5 degrees or something. yours on the other hand prob will not pass tech (maybe not ur strip but most others with good tech will prob deny u) only saying that bc u could be limited to that one strip.

Re: Finished my cage

Wow I never thought about that, I feel like a total ***. It may not be done "correctly" but its got to be more safe than what I had in there before. (nothing).

So with your hoop up straight how close is your head to the tube ? When I was mocking mine up in the straight pos. I put the seat in and sat down and hit the back of my head on the tube.

Re: Finished my cage

i have a good bit of room. my seat is forward of the hoop and mine sticks out alot compared to yours from seen from the outside of the car. but i dnt want any probs when i try to race at a track. my head clears and im hoping i have enough clearance from the top of the bar and the top of my helmet. i should be ok since the top of my shoulders are right below the shoulder harness holes on the seat. dnt think my head sticks out farther than the top of the seat.

i can tell from your pics that ur seat is tilted back too much. my passenger seat is resting on the cross bar and my head still clears. its all about the angle of the seat and how u have the bar positioned. ur prob gona have to put less tilt in your seat u'll just be farther away from the hoop/crossbar.

Re: Finished my cage

That's not a roll cage, it's a roll bar and it won't be track legal until you put in the door bars. Right now it's just added weight.

Re: Finished my cage

It's never called a cage unless it includes a halo bar and a-pillar bars.

Although the main hoop is normally installed vertical, there's nothing in the rulebook stating how much it can be tilted forward or backward. It simply states the the roll bar must be within 6" of the rear of the driver's head. If the main hoop is laid back that far and the driver has the seat moved forward, it won't pass.

Under the roll cage section, it says the main hoop can be laid forward or back but the driver must be encapsulated within the required cage which gives a lot more room for seat positioning.

I have my main hoop behind the door frame. You can't see it when the door is open. I also have my seat mounted back about 6" from a factory location and almost sitting on the floor. I had to relocated my throttle pedal so I could reach it. I have the seat tilted back to give me more head clearance. I almost sit in a reclined position but I'm also in a race seat and held down with a 5 point harness.

Re: Finished my cage

Ok, i'd love to know what structural advantages their are to having a cage like this in the rear I am considering something like this nd would like to know if their is a benefit other than safety ?

Re: Finished my cage

reinforces the rear subframe. added rigidy to the rear half of the car. ties both rear subframes together. allows use of 5 point harnesses. and then theres the saftey aspect.

Re: Finished my cage

forgot to mention they have greater strength than SFC bc of the leverage they obtain due to the height of the hoop and how the bars are angled etc. greater leverage means they are a more effective way to strength the unibody chassis. and will be stronger than any type of SFC, depending on the kind of roll bar/cage used
