99+ Plastic Gas tank in third gen

Will the 99+ plastic tank fit with the factory straps in a 89 GTA? I know they have a rubber flex hose so installing a removing it will be easier since you can flex the fill spout.

Thanks

Re: 99+ Plastic Gas tank in third gen

Direct fit, just hafta deal with the new plumbing & the fact that the fuel level sender isn't compatible with a the 3rd gen gauge.

BUT.....Had you bothered to you'd already know all this & not had to ask & add ANOTHER thread to the TGO database, that answers this question.

yes i have one, you. but a few things...

you have to rig up fuel lines sumhow, you cant get the gauge to work so you have to buy a programable gauge since noone makes one for a ls1 sending unit...and you have to cut the filler neck down, its to long....and little things here and there...unless you need a new gas tank in your car.....it aint worth it tell you the truth. at all.

Re: 99+ Plastic Gas tank in third gen

For a TBI/TPI/LT1 system, you have to take out the regulator inside of the LS1 sending unit, not too hard. The fuel level sending unit can be modified with a 10W 100ohm???? resistor or something like that from Radio Shack, haven't done it yet though.

I changed to a LS1 plastic gas tank for multiple reasons.

1. I had a Walbro TPI pump fail in under 1 year and under 200 miles. LS1 pumps are better plus you can run 2 of them in one tank(but 2 pumps aren't needed unless you have serious horsepower)

2. The filler neck is known to leak on some thirdgen tanks. Why replace a tank down the road when you could replace it with one that will never have this problem.

3. Possibility of rusting tank inside causing fuel pump failure no longer exists

4. LS1 charcoal canister is located right on top of the tank, not in your engine bay

5. Baffled, so when you take a hard corner on a low tank, your fuel won't cut out.

Does anybody have a spec for what the LS1 fuel tank sending units output looks like? I'm also after the thirdgen sensor input signal if anybody happens to know what that looks like.

I'm gonna guess that the plastic tanks are lighter?

Compared to a steel 4th gen tank, its supposed to be 2-3 pounds. Don't know compared to a 3rd gen tank, would imagine 0-3 pounds lighter.

I would guess this would also benefit those who want to switch to running E-85 fuel also.

Do the 93-97's have the same fuel sending unit as the 98-02's? will they also require a gauge?

Ok, so let me make sure im with you here. So your saying that we can put a fourth gen tank in a third gen car? I have a pump on my block, so what would you do in a situation like that? Id love to do the tank swap, but i thought it wouldnt work?

Re: 99+ Plastic Gas tank in third gen

4th gens tanks are a direct physical fit. But the LS1 pumps are too high pressure for a carb, so you'd have to replumb the fuel line a bit.

Re: 99+ Plastic Gas tank in third gen

I elready have a set up in thecar right now that has the block mounted fuel pump. Only difference is, instead of having a third gen tank, id like to switch it over to a plastic fourth. I have the car down to a bare shell at the moment, and i dont want to put the old tank back in it cause it lookes bad. Anice new plastic tank would look nice under it.
