Custom TBI - TPI air intake conversion

This is still somewhat in prodution because...well I wasnt quite sure what to do with the vaccum line and other things that would connect to the stock intake. Anyway heres some pics of what I came up with.

Re: Custom TBI - TPI air intake conversion

Theres two air filters that are square and they go inside the Y shaped TPI intake on each side

Re: Custom TBI - TPI air intake conversion

Looks pretty good. I did something very close to that on my 91 TBI. I purchased the carb/tb hat at a local parts store itw as around 60 dollars. the rest was just stuff i had on hand and the factory Z style aircleaner box, I have since apinted the PVC and hooked the Air sensor into the air box and so on. it all works and funcutions. I no longer lose power once the motor warms up and starts sucking down Hot air form the open element i use to have on it. Good job. Keep updating if you make changes.

Re: Custom TBI - TPI air intake conversion

out of curiosity, can you use a dual snorkel setup from an earlier L69 HO car on the LO3?

yep sure can.

And I've seen some guys just move the intake path straight out and then adapt to the stock l03 breather.

Re: Custom TBI - TPI air intake conversion

I actually did I different setup... I bought a spectre single carb plenum and then ran it out the side down the a 90 4" aluminum to a straight pipe then drilled out the old carcoal cannister location and ran a filter externally... I take some pics when i'm all done so you guys can see...

Re: Custom TBI - TPI air intake conversion

Oh by the way just to say how I made it...I used some sculpting foam (hard foam you can shape easily) then I used a fiber glass kit from my local hardware store and made the black fiberglass carb...hood...thing and the rest is really junk yard stuff two air intake tubes from random cars that fit and the TPI intake.

Re: Custom TBI - TPI air intake conversion

I like it. Does it plumb out air that would normally go through your radiator, though? It kinda looks like that's where it's coming from, behind the grille. I was going to change my intake, but that nice big cylidrical air filter housing has grown on me. I'd at least leave that in.

I dont know if it does or not...The radiator still has the two ducts that feed it from the front but the TPI intake is kinda...in its own little box so im not really sure where it gets the air from...Also about the big metal cylindrical thing... In the beginning my plans were to just spin it so the intake part of it was facing forward and put in the TPI intake but it would take a little more manipulating of the metal and some welding to do that...honestly I believe the fiberglass was easier and it takes up less space but I do like the metal cleaner too

Re: Custom TBI - TPI air intake conversion

By the way I have made a change to it...not a big one but I wired the stock intake temp sensor for the TBI to the stock intake sensor for the TPI...I dont know that it did anything performance/running wise but it makes it feel more complete :P ill get pictures later

Re: Custom TBI - TPI air intake conversion

This setup probably only cost about $50...If there's a junkyard near by you, you just need to find some intake tubes that will fit, a TPI intake, then go to your local hardware store (ex. HomeDepot) and get a fiber glass kit that comes with fabric and the appoxy stuff. After that its just making a mold for the fiber glass and putting it together. Some problems I ran into though was you need a new place to route the valve cover breather tube, I got lucky and one of the intake tubes already had a hole that lined up perfectly...and also you need to plug off the vaccum line that went to the cold start butterfly. Also I believe that it actaully limits the air flow to the engine because when I first put the system in the idle was high. It should adjust itself after a little while. Well I hope that helped at all with your budget. I know how it goes I have a very limited budget too and most of my car is junkyard parts, but goodluck and please do post pictures Id love to see others Ideas.

Re: Custom TBI - TPI air intake conversion

Thats great! What is the iat? If it has something to do with air intake temp sensor then yes I did. I got a long wire, cut the old sensor out and attached it to the old sensors wires and ran it to the new one in the TPI box. It was fairly easy to do.

Yup works for me... Nice job! Looks clean. What did you use to connect the intake hood to the TPI? Looks like a plastic to me.
