I have an 87 GTA and just got a megashifter.
I need some ideas, pics or feedback from people who have custom installed this shifter in their Firebirds that have the one peice shifter plate.
Keeping the original look and even using the stock plate gear indicator would be nice if possible.
Any help or suggestion would be great, thanks.

I know they bolt in no prob in the Camaros with the plate they provide but in the Firebird GTA's it comes with one solid shifter plate.
I just cut out the middle and bolted it on, looks good.

Its personal choice really.
My friend had one in his Camaro and it was awesome, looks sharp and rachet shifting is kinda cool at the track.
As for install, its a pain in the ***, I had extras to do since I had to customize it in the Firebird.
I made a harness so I didnt cut the stock wiring and had to customize the shifter plate to fit and look proper.

The reason for using a Megashifter over the stock shifter is more control over your shifts. It allows you upshift and downshift without worries of missing a gear. The stock shifter will work but it's easy to bump shift over a gear since there is not a positive stop.
Also I had a megashifter in my car. It was a pain to install. I think there are photos on my cardomain website and probably posted on the forums somewhere.

thanks for the info guys. so if you are going to be running for time or racing it is a good investment - for the street its more for show than for go.
i like show - works for me - i will look into it.
do you have to lift the lock with each shift?
and you run it without having to shift?
im very lazy about driving - but i dont mind spending the time playing with the car.

There are instructions on B&M's site that tell you about operation.
Basically the T-Handle is your Reverse Lockout. It prevents you from hammering the shifter forward from Neutral into Reverse. It's needed due to most safety rules. They want to make sure you can hit neutral if you get in trouble without going into reverse at speed. So you lift up on the T-handle for your Neutral to Reverse shift.
You can just leave it in Overdrive and it will work fine. It's just a shifter not a manual valvebody for your transmission.
Pull back to downshift, push forward to upshift. There are built in stops so you don't have to worry about pushing forward past the next gear that's what makes it nice.
There are other shifter designs out there but Megashifter is the only one that offers console version to my knowledge.
I replaced my worn megashifter with the Pro Ratchet. Haven't got to use it yet so I can't describe how much I like it.

my megashifter is in but have had prob after prob with getting everything working.. the gear selector plate does select gears and shifting it is a pain in the butt... I was actually thinking about replacing it with a new one and ditching the older one I bought. Think that has something to do with it...
