Re: Custom Shift Lights? Whats yours like?

I would be very much interesting to see one. I have seen some BMW with 6 speed lights on the shift ****. I was hoping I can find an aftermarket shift light on the ****.

I found a website that shows light on the ****. Not just BMW.
http://www.mustangbodykit.info/stick-shift-*****/

Can't find one for a Fbody.

I saw that on the custom mods thread and I love it!! I've been wanting to do that to my Camaro. Do you have any pics of the install or a writeup? I think I can figure out the wiring of the display, but what I haven't been able to come up with a solution for is how you tell it what gear you're in? The only thing I've been able to think of is a set of micro switches mounted to the tailhousing of the trans that the shift lever trips to signal which gear you're in. But I think the mounting brackets would be a real pain to fab. Any info on that would be very much appreciated.

Thanks! Here is a pic of the micro switch arrangement I came up with. The plate is mounted to the base of my hurst shifter.

I programmed a microcontroller to determine the selected gear from the switch inputs, as well as act like a shift light.

Re: Custom Shift Lights? Whats yours like?

Thanks for the pics. I hadn't thought of using levers to actuate the switches. I was hoping to avoid using a microcontroller though. How hard was it to program?

Not hard, but it all depends on your experience with them.

You could also use logic ICs to figure out what gear your in, and just modify an aftermarket shift light to get your "shift" signal.

Re: Custom Shift Lights? Whats yours like?

That's the problem. I have no experience with them. Its one of those things that I always wanted to learn, but never had the time. With some of the other things I want to do with the dash as far as electronics and gauges its starting to look like I need to take the time to learn though.

Not my idea, but it worked well. This pic was taken before I buttoned everything back up so excuse the mess.
