Lightweight hood struts

Does anyone know where I can find lightweight hood struts? I have a duraflex hood that weighs about 15lbs and I removed the stock struts. I have been using a copper pipe since then? I've checked around the web but haven't found anything yet. So does anyone know of a company or individual who offers lightweight hood struts for our cars? I posted this in the body section as well, just in case.

Re: Lightweight hood struts

I use a factory fiberglass hood and still use the original 87 struts.

Never close your hood by grabbing it at the corners. Always pull down from the center.

Re: Lightweight hood struts

go to napa and take your stock ones with you match them to one they have in the store with a lower pressure rate. the pressure rate is part of the part number ex. pt#SPD-GSNI-5200-40 (spd-gsi means ? , 5200 length in/out piston dia. for manufactures info, but the 40 means how much power it has so two struts would yield 80 lbs lift. try this web site might help www.spdhardware.com/ check out the m-struts looks like some thing that would last.

Re: Lightweight hood struts

eBay sells them. I have the same hood you do, I just havnt bought em yet cause they are $50. Just do a eBay search for 82 92 Camaro hood and search through the listings it will say hood struts w/ fiberglass.

Re: Lightweight hood struts

Better idea: Go to the junk yard and look for struts that cannot hold up the stock hood. They will hold the fiberglass ones fine. Or ask someone that has bad hood struts and take them off of their hands

This is what I did at least.

Mine were cracking my (free) hood near the hinges so I just use a homemade rod

you must have been using the original ones for the steel hood. i was too at first but the hood was bowing and really hard to close! these ones are perfect! they hold the hood up just right and close with the least amount of effort. i suggest you try em out!

Re: Lightweight hood struts

I agree with what the other guys said incase other people read this thread. Struts that are old/wore out and will not hold up a steal hood are PERFECT for fiberglass hoods. I did the same thing, went to the junkyard, found some that would not hold up a steal hood (on a third gen) walked up to the front and asked them how much they wanted for the wore out (bad) struts. They gave me the stuts with the hinges for 10 bucks and they have worked perfectly for me for the last ten years. You should be able to get some for free or pennies on the dollar.

But they are installed upside down. Now someone can reply to me in an irate tone for re-opening an old post. That's why these stay in here...so people can get help 2, 3, 5, 10 years down the road if needed. If you don't want future comments, take the original post down.

Re: Lightweight hood struts

Ha!! I just noticed that. Also, I just ordered a new set of hood struts because those ones also started giving out. Literally just installed them a few days ago. So it looks like the “new” ones I got up there lasted about 8 years. Oh well. We’ll see how long these ones last.

I just installed these from Rock Auto. They have the fatter casing like OEM. I bought a set that were skinny and it would almost rip my hood off from the power they had. The ones on the invoice are Stabilus brand. They go up real nice. They make a nice wooshing sound, and slow up as it reaches the top. Im happy. Way better than the skinny auto-zone ones.

I could care less if you reopened an old post… kids these days.

Before you take this too serious, it’s a joke. I haven’t been on this site in years but randomly got an email saying someone replied

Yo!! @92z28camarokid welcome back!

I got the same. Saw the email and was shocked that this old thread was commented on.

Oddly and coincidentally enough, I literally just replaced my hood struts again! What are the odds?

I’m in the final stages of my LS swap now!

The car looks amazing man! Soooo clean!

It’s been probably 7-8 years since I sold mine and to be honest I think the next route I’m going to go is to build a ratrod. Just welcomed my second kiddo 11 days ago so buying a project anytime soon probably is going to happen haha

Good to know. Just changed mine this week. When they are shot, I'll give these a whirl.

Did you make that lower front lip? Any pics of you making it, if you did?

Re: Lightweight hood struts

I know this is an older post but in case anyone didn't know, the 1982 Camaro came with a factory fiberglass hood with functioning hood vents. If you look up lift supports for that year you will have a steel hood and a fiberglass hood option.

Nope. I wish. But I ordered it from Hawks Motorsports. Love it!! I made a custom under belly for it too. Perfectly flat now.

Re: Lightweight hood struts

Neat piece. Hope there is more support for stuff like this in the future. I have a 91 Z28 so it won't fit mine.
Guess I will hold out and wait, or maybe someday buy and mod to fit. I saw the side and rear pieces, don't like them half as much.
