Amazing custom 87 camaro!!

Hey guys. Saw this months hot rod magazine and had to look up the crazy third gen on the cover since there's no coverage in the magazine of it. Check it out....by far some of the best custom sheet metal work I've ever seen, and twin turbos to back it up. These guys deserve some real credit.

http://www.radrides.com/proj.htm

You may have to click on the 87 camaro in the list but then theres a slideshow of pics of the progress.

I can't even imagine how much he is into it already to this point. Something tells me this will be an easy 100K dollar car. Some guys have some real dedication to thier third gens!

Gorgeous work. Would have gone a bit more subtle on the body mods myself, but no doubt it'll be a head-turner.

Re: Amazing custom 87 camaro!!

WOW! That project is a great tribute to the 3rd gen form. I'm guessing the project isn't complete yet since the pictures stop abruptly. I can't wait to see it completed! Imagine if the form of the 6th gen camaro took that direction?

Re: Amazing custom 87 camaro!!

I can't believe how many negative posts there are in that thread you just linked. I mean I get that people have different tastes, but how is that not overcome by respect for the talent and amount of work being put into that car? The fact that several people complained about a non-rustbucket Camaro being used for this project... the purchase of the Camaro "donor" was what, maybe 5% of their budget? Unless it was the 4.3 mile Camaro they started with, who cares!

Re: Amazing custom 87 camaro!!

I don't know if I absolutely love it, but the fabrication work is out of this world. And yes, that is going to be WAY north of $100,000. If you figure $85 an hour minimum for fabrication that only gets you about 1200 hours and with 2 guys on it full time that is only 14 weeks to build it! On Overhaulin', Foose would have a minimum 12 quys I would think working insane hours for 7 days for about the same labor cost I would imagine...
Not to mention MATERIALS. This thing will be pushing $200,000 by the time they are done I would think.
At least we know what Batman will be driving on the weekends!!

i agree. when i first heard Troy was doing a third-gen build, i was excited. unfortunately as the build progresses, my interest is quickly diminishing. i can respect the quality of fabrication that is happening, but it just looks terrible (IMO).

Re: fugly custom 87 camaro!!

I still think it's ugly, on top of the fact that the only thing on the car that's still third-gen is the windshield and the side glass. great metalwork though.

Re: Amazing custom 87 camaro!!

From what I saw, I think they kept the overall style of the third gen but increased the aggressiveness. I like it a lot, and really hope I can see it finished soon. Gonna be a 1 off, and I'm sure there won't be another with this amount of work for a looooong time!

Re: Amazing custom 87 camaro!!

i personally like the tail section of the car the most and the 5th gen tail lights look way better than the stock ones. i do think the sides are a bit bulky and did i see a stock dash mocked up in there? i couldnt imagine doing all that work and keeping that crappy dash.

I myself have had to do some high caliber fabrication. there is nothing worse to me when someone doesn't at least respect the work that was put into it.

You can respect the work all day and still not like the product. I really do respect the fabricators and the people doing the work. I think they are amazingly talented. That design is another story.

I agree with respecting the work. That takes a lot of hard work and skill. But the design is awful from what I can see so far. It looks like they took a Camaro and started buying gaudy body parts out of an aftermarket catalog that specializes in making cars look like space ships. I've liked every car Troy has ever done so I hope this one won't be the exception.

Just remember that this is not TROY's car, but a customers car.

Troy may not even like it. But as a business, you build what the customer pays for.

Right. If they want some third gen Camaro with 26" wheels and lime green paint, hot pink stripes and a 4 banger from a Dodge Neon under the hood, then that's what they'll build.

I just discovered something......They are not showing us the pics, in the order the car was built!

Pic #265 shows that custom nose on & done, on Page 1. Yet page 2 starts with (essentially) Pic #360. And the nose is #18 (which would #378). Why is the nose in pic #265, yet it appears to be being built at #378?

And in #265, the roof isn't done yet, yet Page 2 implies that it was done before the nose?

Show cars don't care about weight. I seriously doubt this will be any more than a show car & RARE driver. At best, a Power Tour cruising car.

Re: Amazing custom 87 camaro!!

There is already a thread on this car. I am unsure where its at but I found this about a month ago. Awesome build, but definitely don't like the rear. Im a fan of new, not copy and pasted, no matter how good the work is. Make some new from scratch tails.

Not dissing, just can't make everyone happy. The whole car is awesome besides the 5th gen additions. Should have just bought a 5th gen and modded that beyond itself.

It can't be much heavier than that metal support that is already there.

top quality work.
OTT in my opinion though.
But, if you got money to burn....why not eh?
curious to see it finished though.
I'm not liking it either.....mostly because I don't like camaros.
