Re: making your own custom hood?
Depends what you want to make it out of. The easiest way is to use a factory hood and make a mold if you plan on making one out of fiberglass. The mold gives you the basic shape that you start modifying. Chances are, after you're done, you'll end up spending more money than you would have buying an aftermarket hood however you will have a one of a kind custom hood.
I've always wanted to make a lightweight aluminum hood similar to what NASCAR uses. Basically something that's strong enough to keep it's shape but weighs very little. The downside is the size. The hood is over 5' x 5' and isn't square. Try finding a sheet of aluminum wider than 4'.
I'd love a lightweight, lift off hood. Even with a factory fiberglass hood, mine is still heavy. With the fuel cell under the hood, it's a pain to remove the hood after ever pass just to put fuel in the car. Even having someone to help is a pain so I still use the factory hinges and lift shocks. The best I could do is have a scoop mounted directly to the engine and have a hood cut out that slides on around the scoop. That way it would be light enough to remove to put fuel in the car and one person could do it between rounds.
If you plan on making it out of fiberglass, start with smaller projects until you get the hang of working with molds and fiberglass then work up to something large like a hood. You could also buy an aftermarket fiberglass flat hood then modify it to what you want. Probably cheaper and easier to do it that way.

FYRECHKN modded his into a Japanese-style cowl induction hood. Worked great & doesn't get over the 180 degrees of the thermostat even on 111 degree days! Just reaches the thermostat temp & stays there.

Re: making your own custom hood?
i was thinking the rs hood. i will most likely go out this weekend to the j/y and try to find a decent hood or two. my only problem would be finding some one who and weld and find a welder.

Re: making your own custom hood?
sweet! i've always thought of just getting the early third gen hoods with the weird louver cut outs, i think they were the only hood at the time to come out to be fiber glass

Re: making your own custom hood?
Well that's definitely different. Helps if you have a lot of chrome under the hood. I wonder how nice it will look after driving it 12 months of the year? Good idea for a show type car or weekend driver.

I have an ugly L88 hood. I've been thinking of cutting it and putting a scoop on it.

Re: making your own custom hood?
when you say "make a hood" do you mean make the entire hood? or fab on the existing steel one?
just FYI, fiberglass and carbon fiber isn't that difficult, but it would be a LOT more than just buying one...
however, if you have a cool enough design, you can always sell them....
I'll likely start putting out glass n carbon parts for these cars before long.
the main problem though is that it's really hard to make something that looks any better than what the designers came up with in the first place.
a lot of people put swoopy looking scoops on them, which would go great on the 4th gen, but look kinda stupid on the 3rd gen because they are more square and boxy.
or they'll go OVERLY boxy which doesn't compliment the lines either... it's really difficult...
and if you want it to be functional, there's something to consider too...
driving in the rain.....
but it really isn't all that hard to make fiberglass stuff....

I've gone that route. A bolt on aeroscoop onto a cowl. Did a good enough job covering the tunnel ram but the aeroscoop just grabs way to much air at 100+ mph. By half track, I could see the back of the hood starting to lift up.
