t5 install

I have an 88 iroc. Was an auto and is becoming a manual. I got the manual pedals in. Then I sorta guessed where the rod should come through the firewall for the clutch. Grabbed a hole saw and drilled through below the brake booster and slightly to the right. The rod comes through and connects to the clutch pedal but when I push the pedal the rod sorta clicks, or pops. The pedal feels smooth though. I'm just wonderin if this is going to pose a problem or if it should be fine?

Re: t5 install

The firewall should have been dimpled from the factory for the master cylinder spot. The popping might be the push rod moving around on the stud. It could cause premature wear. Problems like this usually don't get better with time/use.

Yeah I though the spot would be obvious but I didn't see it. Doesn't help the firewall is a little beat up. I guess I'm kinda screwed now. Not sure how I'd get the rod into the right position without destroying the fire wall.

Re: t5 install

There are no marks on the firewall. But the pedal are supposed to have support braces that extend down to the firewall and will locate the 2 mounting holes for the master. Is the pushrod in line with the pedals? Or is it at an angle side to side? Are the bushings in the loop of the pushrod present?

Re: t5 install

I don't think I have the braces. I got 4 bolts that are part of the brake booster. Then 1 bolt that goues straight up. Side to side it looks fine. I think the push rod is a bit to high. I don't see any bushing. Also I want to add there's no fluid in the system yet. When you push the clutch with your foot its smooth. But if you get down and push it with hand there's a pop that comes from the shaft within the 1st 1/4 inch. Then its smooth.

Re: t5 install

you may need the braces as you may be hearing the firewall itself pop since it is only sheet metal.

Re: t5 install

Yeah, without the braces that are part of the pedals and must have been cut off, you will eventually have issues tearing the sheetmetal of the firewall.

It don't look like pedals have been cut. I guess I'm just confused on what brace is.

Re: t5 install

If you came from an auto you wont have them unless they came with clutch pedal setup. They are two braces that go around the pedal pivot bolt on each end of the pedal bracket. They then go down to the two studs on the clutch master where the clutch nuts hold everything in place.

Re: t5 install

Ok that helps a lot. So I guess now I either find a brace and remount the master or take my chances as is. More welding to patch the hole I made too. Oh well.
