Intake Heat Shield by Battery Tray

Anyone build one and care to share there experience? I'm running a H/C/I/E LS1 and my IAT's are 110 cruising, and 124 sitting in traffic. Ambient temp was in the 90's. There to high, so hopefully blocking the engine heat will help abit. I dont want to mount the filter under the battery tray so thats why I'm building the shield.

Ive got a template that follows along the bottom and across the fender well pretty good. To seal it against the hood I'll be using weather stripping from a parts car. In the end I want it to look somewhat professional and not something made from homedepot. I'm looking to make it out of one piece of abs plastic. Any ideas on what kind of abs sheeting I should look for? I'll need to be able to heat the plastic up to put a 90 degree bend in it.

Dont pay attention to the height of the cardboard. Wooden skewers sitting in the perforations of the cardboard will map out the contour for the bottom of the hood.

I am curious where the LS1 gets its IAT readings from? If its anything like on a TPI motor, you are probably reading more of the intake "surface" temperature than the actual air temperature. But I am curious to hear about your results.

There is a product called F.R.P. which stands for fiberglass reinforced plastic I have used it on projects before. Yes you can find it at the Home Depot but if you paint it no one will know. I know it comes in sheets but I forget what size, maybe you can get a scrape that will be big enough to do your project. Let us know how things work out.

"air temperature entering the engine" and under hood temperature noh?

Ive got the IAT before the MAF, right outside the box template. Most usually switch to a truck style MAF that has a built in IAT.

Yea I dont mind buying home depot materials, I just have to make it look nice. Which will be up to me to do. I'll check the material out.

Is that a prebuilt piece?

What do you guys think about using a piece of lexan or acrylic? Any idea on how it'd fare against heat transfer?

You definitely want to shield the air filter from sucking in hot underhood air by doing what your picture shows. While there are no ready make kits (that I'm aware of), most aftermarket intakes of modern design feature an insulating partition to let the air filter breathe in the coldest air possible. Too bad a lot of folks still believe an open element gives you all the gain of a true CAI system.

Re: Intake Heat Shield by Battery Tray

I'm carbed but why couldn't you guys figure a way to get that filter in front of the radiator? There's a lot of room up there. Just throwing it out there, I will slap myself if it is a stupid idea.

I think Ive only seen one person with their filters ahead of the radiator. If I remember correctly they had to lower or tilt the upper radiator support. Theres just not enough space to fit adequate size tubing between the hood and upper rad support. Maybe theres a way to route the tubing under the battery tray, behind the parking lights to get in front of the radiator.

Ordered an acrylic and abs sheet, since I couldn't find anything local. Acrylic will be here today, so hopefully I'll get to work on it this weekend.

Re: Intake Heat Shield by Battery Tray

Got the rough cut/sanding done. Still need to sand down the bottom of the shield so it sits nice and flush. Shouldn't look too bad with some paint, and nice weather stripping.

Finally got the ABS sheet, so I was able to get a rough cut done. Still waiting on the weather stripping I ordered. I added another tab to bolt down the box.

Re: Intake Heat Shield by Battery Tray

Finally starting to finish it. All thats left to do is some sanding, painting, and to permanently attach the weather stripping. I wont be able to to read the IAT's until I take it to the dyno which wont happen until I wire up and hook up the AC.

Re: Intake Heat Shield by Battery Tray

Looks great! My IAT was hitting 130-140 while in traffic (summer).

I made something similiar using fiberglass but in addition I cut out a hole at the bottom and the filter is half through the hole.

At first I only noticed a 10 degree (ish) change while in traffic. Once I moved my MAF/IAT into the CAI it dropped to 100-110 in similiar conditions so at least 20 degrees was due to heat soak.

Forgot to post finished pics. Doesn't look to bad. Any help lowering the IAT's would make it worth it to me.

Re: Intake Heat Shield by Battery Tray

You've inspired me. I am gonna try to do something similar tomorrow. I did a test a few weeks ago, measured IAT's while driving and also outside ambient airtemp with a thermocouple on the multi-tester, found that the IAT was typically +20F. That's gotta be fixed ASAP. Hopefully I can make something as nice as yours and get a result soon. I might even open up the battery tray to ensure constant fresh air if need be.

Re: Intake Heat Shield by Battery Tray

Yup..really liking how thats setup.I got my battery on the driver side and the filter on the passenger side.I have drilled1 inch holes in the tray to allow fresh air to the cone filter but I still need to make something similar to this and seal it off.But unlike you..I have the truck 85mm maf so no chance in relocating just the iat lol.I just done know if its worth the effort to move the maf away from the tb..or just supply a much cooler air.

Re: Intake Heat Shield by Battery Tray

why not just use a stock TPI airbox with a pair of high flow filters?

a little invisible ductwork inside the grille, and you could ram more cool high pressure air from in front of the car straight into the throttle body than the engine would ever need.

A stock tpi snorkle would be more of a restriction than anything.

Heres another one I built on my brothers ls1 swap:
