Third Brake Light LED Conversion
If anyone is interested in this please respond, I dont want to tie up the forums if there is no interest. I did this with a 90's model blazer third brake led unit.

Let see what you got. I installed a star cluster type led in mine years ago making it brighter, but interest in what you would do.

Re: Third Brake Light LED Conversion
Ok sorry if i get to long winded been accused of it before.
I did this because of the fact that the light assembly was blowing lights rather quickly and at 7+ dollars apiece i wanted to do something different than that. My light was also getting rather brittle with the heat of those lights.
I also like doing "stock" mods to my car and since this came from a chevy blazer it suited me.
How i got started was i noticed the third brake light on my friends blazer was about the same length as the one on my camaro. So at the local you pull it I found one. Cost was $10 and with 3 bulbs out on my tail light I was going to be money ahead if it worked.
Now the light bar i got was missing a diode and one bulb so you will notice the first three on the left are brighter than the rest and the middle is not so bright, but i went ahead and used it just to see if it would work.

Re: Third Brake Light LED Conversion
To do this i used a torx driver to remove it. A dremel tool to do the cutting and grinding. Then hot glue to hold it in place.
So first i had to open up the assembly to get the light bar inside.
I used the dremel with a cutting wheel to split the lense from the back since it is heat fused together.
The the light bar had some tabs on the end that kept it from fitting down inside. I used the same cut off wheel to remove them.
Then i ground some flats on the rasied sections between the bulb buckets for thed bar to rest on.

Promise to show the flats here.
I then hot glued the bar in place and tried the assembly on the battery to make sure I had not broken anything else.
The ends of the lense where the hardest part of the cutting. Since they where fused around the screw holes also. Had to be very carefull with that whole process since the lense wanted to break out towards the front of it.

Re: Third Brake Light LED Conversion
Have you guys looked on eBay for replacement led bulbs? I am looking for them for the dome light since they are getting hot and melting the very old plastic light sockets. I do want to do something tasteful but not *****.

I did the same thing but a circuit board I picked up at local electronic store. the circuit board had twenty surface mount red LEDs. I did the whole thing for $6.00.

Re: Third Brake Light LED Conversion
I figured there was a better way and little bit cheaper way to do it. I just cant my electrical friend to get "round 2 its". He says they are on back order. I would like to put them in the front turn lights and the side markers, but will try the dome and trunk lights first. I would love to get one to light up the ac controls since that isnt right now. I would still light it from the side like the original set up.

Re: Third Brake Light LED Conversion
I love it it is exactly what I want to do. I want a brighter or atleast larger light like what you have ended up with. I may go to the you pull it here and get some side markers so I can work along on them and not be without them for a couple days. Need the better lights for safety around here because of bad drivers, but also gives it a modern taste.

Mine was from a late 90s astro van, but ive noticed blazers & other GM suv's use the same unit.Another observation ive noticed is earlier units have 40 leds, while later years use only 30.

Re: Third Brake Light LED Conversion
Mine came from a 96' Blazer, but i have noticed that a later Tahoe has a defused third brake light if you dont like the little bright points of light.....makes me think of Senior Bush.....
I just wonder if it is the lense or a different mounting or a defuser between it and the lense?

Re: Third Brake Light LED Conversion
Nicely done! Thanks for sharing! I'll be planning this for mine. The only thing I wonder about is if the hot glue will cause problems, or release, in the hot summer Sun. Is three a reason you didn't choose to use epoxy?

Re: Third Brake Light LED Conversion
I did a similar mod to my DD Alero on a slow day at work. I used the guts of a 2nd gen Kia Sedona 3rd brake light and threw it together on my lunch break with junk from my tool box.
